On Sunday night, Phil Lesh & Friends presented a special Valentine’s Day concert at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh was joined by a band that included guitarist Stanley Jordan, multi-instrumentalists Jason Crosby and Barry Sless, drummer John Molo and the Midnight North Singers (Grahame Lesh, Alex Koford and Elliott Peck) for a show that mixed Grateful Dead classics with a diverse set of covers featuring a theme of love and love lost.
The first set started with a jam that gave way to the American Beauty deep cut “Till The Morning Comes.” Two generations of Lesh teamed with Peck to sing the “Peggy-O” that followed. Elliott also handled vocals on a cover of Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic.” Grahame and Alex then fronted the group on a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Girl From The North Country,” while Koford stepped into the spotlight for a take on “She’s The One” by Bruce Springsteen ahead of the “Sugaree” that closed the opening stanza.
Jordan shined throughout a second set that started with a jam that gave way to the first verse of “Dark Star.” Koford handled vocals on a cover of “Wonderwall” by Oasis that emerged out of “Dark Star.” Phil then delivered one of his signature songs, “Unbroken Chain,” ahead of a cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.” The set rolled on with “Scarlet Begonias” and a “Mountains Of The Moon” that led into a stellar duo jam from Stanley and Phil. Phil Lesh & Friends ended the second set with the second verse of “Dark Star” as well as covers of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” and Stephen Stills’ “Love The One You’re With.” The Midnight North Singers had one more turn in the spotlight during a “Layla” encore.
Tonight, Phil presents another show at Terrapin Crossroads using the same band that played on Sunday night. A live webcast is available via the venue’s website.
