Phil Lesh & Friends Add Scott Metzger For Saturday Scorcher At The Capitol Theatre
By Scott Bernstein Oct 30, 2016 • 9:28 am PDT
Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh continued a Phil-O-Ween run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Saturday with the second of four consecutive shows at the historic venue. Lesh was aided by Joe Russo’s Almost Dead/WOLF! guitarist Scott Metzger, who was added to the core lineup of guitarist Luther Dickinson, multi-instrumentalist Barry Sless, keyboardist Jason Crosby, drummer John Molo and vocalist Nicki Bluhm.
Phil & Friends opened with “Jack Straw” and then went with the old Pigpen favorite “I’m A King Bee” ahead of “High Time.” The set continued on with “Big Railroad Blues” and an expansive “Bird Song.” Bluhm then led the ensemble through “Somebody To Love” before Metzger sang “Feel Like A Stranger” to end the first set.
The second set began with “Deal” ahead of a cover of the blues standard “Walkin’ Blues.” One of the evening’s biggest surprises came next as the band tackled “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” by The Allman Brothers Band before of a series of Grateful Dead classics: “New Speedway Boogie,” “The Wheel” and “Terrapin Station.” Phil and his band ended the second set with “In The Midnight Hour” and returned for a “The Music Never Stopped” encore that saw Metzger and Bluhm belt out the lyrics.
