For those of us who grew up in the 80's, listened to the Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo soundtrack, wore Moonpants, and danced on pieces of old cardboard and linoleum, well, we know what boom boxes are. Or at least what they were. How about a new BoomBox, especially one that takes old school styles and combines them with Beck, Gorillaz, St. Germain, AND delivers live performances that have the entire Southeast turning their heads. Would you check it out?

Formed about three years ago, BoomBox is not your traditional group. It only has two members - a guitar player/vocalist and a DJ - that combine live instruments with multi-track sequencing, turntables, and samplers for a unique brand of infectious music. Zion Godchaux and Russ Randolph came together while working on an album that Zion was collaborating on with his mother, former Grateful Dead member Donna Jean Godchaux. Russ was engineering the record and the two connected immediately.

Zion Godchaux - BoomBox
After forming in late 2003, BoomBox spent most of 2004 in the studio developing both their sound and their unique approach to live performance. Since then, they've been refining that sound, which has stirred up a nice buzz with promoters, media, and other bands.

At the time they met, Randolph was tired of playing in traditional bands. He says, "I had pretty much given up, too much of a pain in the ass, not fun nor fulfilling, either musically or creatively." Zion, who had practically grown up with the Grateful Dead, was feeling similarly jaded. Together, they had an original vision of what they wanted to do and where they wanted to go.

Russ Randolph - BoomBox
In the mid 90's Zion was a DJ in the San Francisco house music scene, and pondered the possibility of fusing DJ tracks with live instruments. A decade later that fusion has come to fruition with BoomBox. With musical influences from house to the Grateful Dead, Zion says his vision is "not just jamming live, but to write full songs in dance format like a singer-songwriter, retaining the lyrics, the melody, and the song. It's the best of both worlds, something everybody could groove and have a good time with. But, when the show was over they could still take away the meaning and the songs as a whole."

In just three short years, BoomBox's shared vision has come a long way from their home in Florence, Alabama. What began as local gigs and playing aftershows has blossomed into a full-blown touring act. With one studio release under their belts, they're working on remixing some live tracks for a new album. "We want to establish BoomBox as a legitimate act in a bigger market, to take it to the next level on a bigger scale," Randolph says. By the overwhelmingly positive reaction to their debut, their rapidly growing fan base, and Randolph and Zion's infectious dedication to their music, their legitimacy seems almost inevitable.

Despite their unique instrumentation, every song does have a somewhat traditional structure which they're able to flesh out live. They jokingly say that "we share one brain between the two of us," which is evident in the way they finish each other's sentences and thoughts. Onstage, they are "two people as an extension of one DJ" and the chemistry between them is undeniable.

So, what does the future hold for BoomBox? "We are always experimenting in the 'Lab' towards a bigger vision. We want to keep everything fresh and new, and exciting for us as musicians. We want to take it as far as it will go," says Randolph. Zion adds, "It's still a mystery to us. We know the path we're on will have twists and turns but we have a good idea where we are going now. I'm blown away by what is possible and am happy to experience the adventure."

I discovered Boombox almost three years ago now. I had been going on the jamband scene for a while, and I enjoyed it, but knew something was missing. These guys provided that missing piece for me. In a scene where a lot of the music can sound the same after a while, they have a fresh new sound. A good strong beat is essential, and Boombox provides that in every track I've ever heard them perform. They're gonna blow up, so jump on board...

Saw Boombox at the infamous Stephen Talkhouse on Long Island and absolutely loved the show...it's electronic music and smokin' guitar...without the bling (and I mean that as a positive)Simply great music with a great beat with undertones and overtones of an amazing jam band. Go see these guys!

This band deserves to be heard. I've seen them at least 8 times and I can't wait till they come back to my state. They bring together elements from virtually all party music made in the last 40 years. Boombox are a unifying force between many different subcultures (hippies, ravers, indie rockers, etc.) and this sharing of our different styles is great for music.

Yes, Nelson Ledges had the hook-up on them a couple years ago. They play there a lot. They are playing at least a couple times this year. Boombox gets you dancin. Great sound. Zion and Russ are the necest guys. They deserve to be recognized! I am however SUPER bummed that KIM HAGEN was not mentioned. Anyone who knows Boombox knows she was a HUGE part of them getting noticed. You know its true! Look at all the photos on the Nelson Ledges website. Kim was an important part of Boombox! The 3 of them had something very special, not just to listen too but to watch live. Kim's creative, entertaining talents gave the band a unique gift that is obviously not there anymore. A huge loss. Now a terrible accident has devistated her life and what, no mention at all!? Shame on you!! Really...
I still love the guys, the sound and cant wait to see them again this year! Nelson Ledges Quarry May 5th B A B Y !

Well, of course, but I think you have it backwards, I think Tuscaloosa really likes BoomBox!

Something else that should have been mentioned in this article is Zion's father, Keith Godchaux, who played keyboards for the Grateful Dead, too.

By the way, check out this album "Keith and Donna" and the cover art of Zion: http://tralfaz-archives.com/coverart/K/keith_and_donna.html

Something to note here, the drawings on Zion's forehead (on the cover) were doodled by Jerry, and I understand them to be "Zion's thoughts..." I think Jerry knew something musical would be in Z's future, and he could not have expressed it any better than in these drawings...

Yea this collabo is solid. I know that they could hold their own even without the dead connection. No is no such thing as a coincidence. Best of two worlds: the perfection of a DJ coupled with the spontaneity of jazz guitar. Oh yea and the dead connection, that is a trip. You'll know where i'm coming from if you read my profile. I was just having a conversation with someone about this yesterday before I read about/discovered boombox here on Jambase. Its that synchonicity shit that blows my mind. Boombox is an instant favorite of mine. The music never stopped.

Never concidered "it" part of the group? "It" is a she. And "she" was most certainly a big part. Hello?! I have been enjoying Boombox for 3 years now. The Boombox website for 2 years+ was: KIM, ZION, RUSS,- BOOMBOX
I really dont understand why there is any question...
She was a big part of "the group" and especially their live performance. Everyone talked about not only the music but Kim as well. You didnt concider her part of the group? Then you didnt know Boombox. And yes its "your" opinion, and its wrong. She helped the band with years of hard work and surely helped generate a lot of great feedback and FANS by her unforgettable performances that were PART of the Boombox experience! Whether you like to think or not...
Boombox will jam. The music speaks for itself. I love it. I love Zion and Russ. But Kim will certainly be missed, by everyone.
Get better quick Kim!
Great job Zion&Russ. See you soon!

"took away from the music a bit much" ?!.. ok, dude. Out of all the people who have seen Boombox with Kim, I'm sure you are the only person who would ever have the "need" to say something like that. Are you stoned or just attempting to make some arrogant, pointless coments to stir folks up?
Since you are so knowledgably opinionated, you know Kim is a very sensitive subject to MANY right now.
If she comes up again in topic, I suggest you put your foot in your mouth and bite hard.

Hello all,

The concern and interest in Kim and Boombox both is heartfelt. Honestly unless you are in the band or family you don't know the whole story. If you all just sit tight for a minute, there will be a press release coming soon from the band concerning subjects including Kim.

We obviously all read these comments so please think of Russ Zion and Kim, and imagine you are writing to them as well. Keep the talk friendly beacause the potential for assumptions are high.

Thanks everyone for the continued support for Boombox
they honestly do appreciate it. The live shows and interaction with all of you is what makes this so great.

A press release about Kim. Uh, your a little late...
Management sure messes up a lot of good music. If you are not careful, players become puppets. Bad decissions are easily made. Why should an artist need people to talk for them?(this is where management freaks out totaly and starts thinking of some kind of long stupid rebuttle and try to give me the thumbs down 100 times).

And turner-i believe you were warned. you must not have bit that foot hard enough...I also concur. Ass.

*Boombox is a fantastic band. Zion and Russ make some incredible music. No doubt! The disc is hot! Super groovy!
As I see, no one is disputing that.
And that is the importance of this article.

...was reading about Wakarusa and noticed the Boombox name and I saw this article last week, too but did not have time to chime in...I saw these guys in Chicago with DSO and was impressed with the singer. His voice is so smooth and lifting. To me, the most incredible part about Boombox is the freshness of the sound. I cannot really think of anything like it, totally... Man, some hot topcis on here! Hey now, this article could have been longer and started with "Zion...the son of Donna Jean," rather than "Donna Jean's son..." As far as I'm concerned, they make it on their own without the Dead, but of course, Z would not have made it to earht without his mum, but well you know.... if you can make it out of this noise, you should hit up Boombox with Perpetual Groove next Thursday (I think) March, 23 at Soul Kitchen in Mobile-- we be there... We saw them with PArticle last time and this should be a great first.

the disco biscuits are fresh..i love them to deathhh them and snoop both sold out shows so whats the point here? as the comments against kim and her being apart of the band i do feel she has a part in boomboxs no matter if someone believes it or not..her dance moves to her groove to promoting like no other to getting others to help sell merch trust me she is a big part, sure maybe she didnt do any of the sound but her part in that band wasnt for that..it was to bring a light around the stage to get others to groove along with her, its bringing the vibe to whole other level..im not here to judge on what boomboxs does thats there own buisness but i'll still remember the day when kim came down the high in the air silky rope and glide on down and head out to the crowd spinning fire and dancing to the grooves..3 cheers for kim, and 3 cheers for boomboxs for this article..enough of the hatrid be happy for these guys they came along way and deserve the praise.

Saw them for the first time here at Nelson Ledges the last night of Grateful Fest, and I was absolutely blown away!! DSO finished their amazing set, we were in the back standing on a picnic table...as soon as DSO finished this side stage lite up right next to us outta nowhere, and this groovy techno started to play...they had a disco ball in the trees behind the stage and everything...I do have to say it will be hard (I definitely plan on seeing you guys again!!) to hear them again without Kim putting on an amazing performance in front of them...best of luck to her, I was so saddened when I looked them up some time after Grateful Fest and heard the horrible news. Anyways, Last Thoughts on Woodie Guthrie is one of the best songs I've ever heard...period, esp. live...I've passed that song on to many a friends from all different walks of life and music and it seems to hit everyone just the same.
P.S. You guys should put Last Thoughts on myspace so I can pass it on further...thanx!!!

This is a great article! We love Boombox and saw this this past weekend in Yellow Springs Ohio at the Funky Bean Farm. What an amazing show. The people were so kind and there were lots of stuff going on. Fire spinning and live painting then BoomBox came out and played until 3 am. I could not believe how tight that are since the last time we saw them in Athens, Ohio last November. I think they played all the songs on their list and them some. whoa...what an amazing show..I am still flying high from the St. Patty's night!

I also got one of those cool Boombox hoodies everyone was wearing!

Zion is the best! First time I met him, he smoked some headies with me and we got to talking. I had no idea who boombox was, or even that he was donna-jean's son! He's a very humble dude. All he did was mention "I'm in a band, called boombox" What a sweetheart! I hope you all get a chance to check out their funky grooves!

I saw these guys last night in Greenville SC!! Although I have seen them several times before, this past show was by far the best yet!!! They also have some new toys to play around with on stage. Sounds freaking SWEET!!!!! Definitely go see these guys any chance you get. It's impossible not to move when these guys do what they do!

Kind vibes,
