Melvin Seals & JGB :: 09.02.11 :: Arcata Theater :: Arcata, CA
Melvin Seals & JGB started off the Labor Day weekend in a town where they always seem to bring a large crowd. In fact, they last sold out at local hotspot Humbrews and graduated to a larger venue in Arcata this go-round. This was their first time playing the Arcata Theater, which even with more space the crowd still packed the theater.
While Stu Allen is on leave from the band, Dave Hebert from The Schwag has been filling in for him. Hebert brings a sound that reminds you of a mid-1970s Jerry Garcia and this was apparent this night. The show was not short on classics with such tunes as “Sugaree,” “Cats Under the Stars,” and “Sisters and Brothers.” One song that stood out was “Mighty High,” a tune that Donna Jean Godchaux would sing with the Jerry Garcia Band. When the band ended their set with “Deal,” the crowd waited around expecting an encore but it was not going to happen this night as the lights came on. Still, despite no encore Melvin Seals & JGB delivered a solid show to a faithful crowd.
