The New Mastersounds | 03.13.09 | S.F.

Images by: Dave Vann

Simply put, The New Mastersounds are funky goodness incarnate. This U.K. based quartet - Eddie Roberts (guitar), Simon Allen (drums), Pete Shand (bass guitar) and Joe Tatton (organ and piano) - understands the ins & outs of soul music, from its tentative '50s roots in Ray Charles right through James Brown, '70s jazz-fusion, Bootsy Collins bomp, '90s Acid Jazz and even splashes of today's electronica flavored stuff. Live, they are all in, all the time, and they are the rare instrumental soul group that harness the same energies in the studio (see JamBase's unadulterated rave for their latest album, Plug & Play, here). We were fortunate to have Mr. Vann and his trusty lens on-site when the band hit S.F. this month, and we're happy to share what he captured that evening with y'all.

The New Mastersounds
03.13.09 :: Fillmore Auditorium :: San Francisco, CA

The New Mastersounds are currently on tour in the U.S. They perform next at Old Town Pub in Steamboat Springs, CO on Tuesday, March 24. Full tour dates listed here.

Great to see much approval for this RED HOT band. First time I heard them reminded me of the good ol' Greyboy Allstars days... then I saw them live... Beyond Funk City!

there's lot of good stuff of theirs on

also, I have their electronic/beats remix of their tunes album. = great stuff.

occasionally semi-criticized for over-rendunancy with 2 long sets of their music, simply know these cats bring it hard EVERY gig! They are super kind guys who really want to show the U.K. has soul too.

great pics as always Dave.

BoboJeff, i only agree in part. You're right they're not groundbreaking, a lot of their stuff sounds like unreleased meters tracks. But to say that they are too "squeaky clean" is a joke. That's called old school funky tightness. Check out some meters and james brown for a review

Bobski I know what you mean, but clean funk is better than no funk at all.

Well, I was at this show at the Fillmore and I have to be one of the first on here to slightly disagree. They were tight, but there was nothing new in this genre that hasn't been done. My friend and I that went are huge fans of the Greyboy Allstars and saw them many times in their prime in the mid to late 90's and all we kept thinking the whole night was these guys have nothing on the Greyboys in their day. The key element The Mastersounds seem to lack this night was playing with feeling and soul. It all seemed very forced and like they were going through the motions. BUT, I am a lover of funk/jazz/soul till I die and these guys on their worst night is still better than 90% of the shit thats out there. It was just nothing spectacular is all..

depends on how well rested they are.

I have seen them "go thru the motions" and i have seen them

"bring the HEAT".

Simon Allen is one of the nicest people on earth and I am forever in debt to this band for hanging out with me at the bamboo room in lake worth florida and giving me a press pass for langerado that year.

I bow my head in thanks to these guys for their kindness :)

Totally agree Iwantstogetfunkedup.

Theyre still a good listen. Just nothing new.

They sound like The Jam? Thats news to me. Just because theyre british? Hmmmm....The Jam was completely different...and had a ton of originals and were fairly unique in their own category. Thats a strange comparison.

I hear these guys are super nice, and I honor them for playing camp parties at HSMF, but other than that, just another decent funk band, but one that I wont remember in 10 years.

These guys are great musicians and cool guys, but I agree with the 'too clean' sentiments.

If you wanna hear some real English sounds, check out The Levellers. America is totally missing out!
