HeadCount Launches Letter-Writing Campaign

The HeadCount organization has offered the first glimpse of its post-election game plan, launching a poll to ask music fans what political issues should be the highest priority for Congress and the Obama administration. The poll can be found at www.HeadCount.org or by clicking here. The organization will then "stage letter-writing and awareness campaigns based on the results of this survey," according to the website.

"We have a lot of big plans for 2009," said HeadCount's Executive Director Andy Bernstein. "Registering voters is just the first step. There are many ways for our community to be socially and politically active. That's what we're trying to achieve."

The letter-writing campaign will debut at the Phish shows in Hampton next week. Anyone who stops by the HeadCount table will be able to pick any issue and complete a pre-printed letter to their Congressional representative, adding their own comments. This will extend to other concerts in the Spring and Summer, including the upcoming Dead Tour.

"Government works for us," Bernstein said. "We put them in office. Now it's time for some hands-on management."

Not the highest but definitely the HIGHest priority: Making marijuana medically available via dispensary in every state.

I guess as the economy worsens, more and more people will have something to say to their representatives. We had HeadCount at our little festival, and they really were a positive and welcomed addition to the fest. Good stuff

I don't vote, let me start with that. A lot of people have no respect for that stance, but I don't care. At Summercamp last year one of the headcount guys started bugging me, so I decided to have a little fun and talk like I was Pro-McCain. He walked away.

mesaxi...the same thing happened to a friend of mine during the 2004 Dead tour...he walked over and (just for fun) said he wanted to register republican...the girl working the table wouldn't allow him to register under republican...she kept trying to persuade him to sign up under independent, green, etc...just not republican. I knew, at that point, what we were dealing with...People can defend them (and lob personal attacks at me), but the fact still remains they support liberal, left-wing candidates. No one ever said that Dems and/or Repubs were the only answers to our problems (in fact, I believe both are the main cause of our problems). It's time to inject third and fourth party points of view in our debates. Why does it always have to be "left" or "right"? I agree with both on some issues...I agree with neither on other issues. They both lack common sense and put party ahead of country.

headcount is about as unbiased as rush limbaugh. they got the goofball they wanted for potus and the congress that they wanted too, and these fuckin elitists on a shopping spree have litterally dropped 63 BILLION per day of the obama administration. thanks headcount! now that's definately "change", which we were promised...and i'm sure there is lots of "hope" that it will fix what alarmists believe is wrong with the economy, but franklin once said "he that lives upon hope will die fasting." there's no evidence to believe obama will fix anything. your affirmative action votes were wasted!

wake up folks, yes you jambasers and your incestuous little siblings at headcount too: you don't spend your way out of rough economic times.

headcount, please stay away from shows. your unstated but extremely biased agenda is feeding the government gremlins after midnight and they're numbers, sizes, and bad habbits are already exploding without you. please stop! if someone is too dumb to register to vote, you're not helping by doing it for them. if someone is too lazy to dialog with their government reps until you write the letter for them, perhaps it isn't in the nations best interest to highlight their desires anyway. fuck, most of the people your encouraging to speak up couldn't even name their own congressman/woman!

^^^^^^^^PAoldhead and stoops are quite correct in this matter.

if we wanna live like people and do what we want, why do we elect people to tell us what to do? why dont we all tell ourselves what to do? why have a government?

we must govern ourselves before ruling another

Musicians for the most part will always lean towards liberal ideas. I understand that, I don't understand how an organization trying to register only liberal voters is acting against the fundamental ideas our forefathers instilled in the Constitution. I'd call myself a moderate, agree with some liberal views (pro-choice and laxing of certain laws) and some conservative views (smaller government and keeping my hard earned money for myself). In a way I'm a hippie conservative, an extreme oxymoron, but thats the freedom I have because of the country I am lucky to be a citizen of. I'd prefer to keep things in the middle. I don't understand why this organization would shut out half of the population because of their political views. Especially when we as a country got past biases to elect our current president. Why ridicule this very freedom that made the impossible just decades ago possible?

In which case, stop giving people money who put themselves in the position they did by spending well above their means and stop expanding the role of the government! I don't trust any politician because they all have their hands in our pocket, some just decide to take more than others. Evident by the cabinet members who conveniently forgot to pay taxes. We elected them to legislate on behalf of the people, not on the behalf of corporations and other political groups who buy votes. I guess our tax dollars paying them are not good enough.

End rant.

to the person who said "you have to pick a side on issues dude" I have my sides.... what I was saying was Headcount is something that I could get behind despite the fact that I know I am diamterically opposed to most people's views in the community, that being said when all you want is for people to vote thats cool, going partisan or taking a side is not cool.... anyway the guy above who said if people are too stupid to register themselves etc.. is right so what I said is moot.

Wow. I am so impressed by some of the comments! Makes me happy that people are starting to see through the bullshit and see that republicans and democrats are exactly the same. Read about the new deal! It didn't work. It prolonged and deepened the depression. The Federal Reserve is the real enemy behind our current economic situation. Do some reading about those secretive bankers behind the curtains. It is really messed up. Here is some further reading about the "change" that headcount fought so hard for: http://news.antiwar.com/2009/02/20/obama-escalates-drone-strikes-inside-pakistan/ http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D96FKURG0&show_article=1 And if you think Obama is going to legalize it!?!?! Keep on dreaming. Do your research on his Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel. He is a furious drug warrior. With a right hand man like that, I doubt we will see any progression in marijuana reform.

And for the love of god. I would rather marijuana remain illegal and we buy it on the black market than having the government taxing and regulating it. Everything they tax and regulate goes to hell. If they are going to legalize it, they have to really legalize it and keep their dirty fingers out of my pot.

How bout adults stop having children they can't feed or 'don't feel like' taking care of?

I think that would go a long way to helping our youth grow up in a less-violent, less crowded, less burdened and more educated society.

IF YOU PLAN ON LIVING OFF WELFARE, DON'T HAVE BABIES THAT YOU DON'T PLAN ON RAISING!

Let's be honest people. Some cultures in America are allowed to get away with murder (literally and figuratively) while some are always cleaning up the mess.

This is not a left or right issue. It's an issue of responsibility. Don't have babies you can't/don't want to raise.

Thanks to organizations like headcount - both "left" and "right" not that there is a difference - we had 90% of incumbents re-elected but congress had a 20% approval rating!! Uninformed people will vote a straight ticket based on their party and have NO clue who anyone on the ballot is other than the presidential candidates. It is DISGUSTING. Blame this all you want on Bush, you are half right, but don't forget about congress, which for much of the Bush admin had a democratic majority. They very very very rarely went against Bush's wishes. And now we have the articulate and educated version of Bush in office. Think outside of the box for change people.
