51st Annual Grammy Awards

Plant/Krauss
The 51st Annual Grammy Awards ceremony offered a few musical treats mixed in with the regular bunch of not-so-inspiring collaborations. What stood out was a pretty good kick-off from U2 doing "Get on Your Boots", a decent showing of Coldplay with Jay-Z doing an acoustic "Lost", Kanye and Estelle doing their huge hit "American Boy," a solid reading of "15 Steps" with tons of horns and drums courtesy of the USC Trojan Marching Band with Radiohead, a super-pregnant M.I.A. taking part in the very impressive "Swagga Like Us" with Kanye West, Jay, T.I. and Lil' Wayne. But in the end, it was all about who took home the lil gold guy.

I only watched the first half, must have been real bored. Didn't really like much of the live music, but I was impressed by Carrie Underwoods guitar player, Orianthi. Man she's hot. And plays some serious licks too. Also, I like the looks of some of the winners, Mickey, Plant, Spear, Springsteen, Kings, Volta, BB King....did they show any of these artists picking up their hardware, or was it all R and B, and Pop stuff?

There is exponentially better "rap" aka hip-hop out there than lil' wayne. I guess one step at a time though.

I found a few things interesting... never considered the Flecktones as "pop," but still happy they won.

I was also pondering something else... If Joe Satriani wins his case against coldplay for completely ripping him off, do they get their grammy revoked? I certainly hope so

Radiohead playing "15 Steps" with the USC marching band was sick!! They should have won best album but Plant/Krauss had the name recognition I guess. They really took a flier on Hancock last year so I guess this year it's back to the status quo of stacking a bunch of awards on the best known artist to come out with a new album. Seesh!!

I had to look up lil Wayne lyrics to see if there was something there, I've managed to remain willfully ignorant of mainstream rap for sometime and I couldn't tell if Mr_McDankenstein's was being sarcastic or truthful. I personally enjoy when he rhymes "erp erp" with "shczerp shczerp" that pretty much hits the plight of African Americans in the U.S. on the head. WOW, how did this happen.

Shawty say i lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-look like a lollipop

NO ONE HAS SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE DISGRACEFUL PERFORMANCE OF THE JONAS BROTHERS RUINING AN ALL TIME GREAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!

im sorry but that was one of the more pathetic things i have seen in my ENTIRE life. those lip syncing/non instrument playing/pathetic white boys had NO business playing with a legend like STEVIE WONDER.

they werent even playing their instruments! as a musician, it WASNT EVEN CLOSE TO LOOKING LIKE THEY WERE!!!!! NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!!!!

i am sorry for the rant, but that was one of the more pathetic things ive seen in my life. i dont know if i should be disappointed in stevie or not, but he will still always be a hero to me i guess. just absolutely pathetic to put some losers on stage that will be gone in 5 years with a legend of music..

I agree that the Jonas brothers are crap and were not playing their instruments, however, Stevie wonder WAS a legend. I think he may have left that title behind when he became the house keyboard player for every award show known to man. He is a whore who plays with anyone on every show there is.

Also, who cares if Lil Wayne doesn't offer insight with his lyrics? No one does - No rappers, or any other bands that you listen to. Maybe Nas , but he is old and lame - or Michael Franti who has been playing the same show for 3 years now with his yell fire songs. Hip Hop / Music in general is about entertainment and Most use it for that - a select few use it as a vehicle to express opinions - and some of them just sound preachy and I don't like that.

WTF? Radiohead gets snubbed again?! that's three times nominated for album of the year with no wins. I know that plant/krauss was the new thing and their album is good, but In Rainbows is amazing. What more does Radiohead have to do? I feel like they'll never win it. Then again, it's only the Grammys who really cares? The Grammy people aren't the ultimate authority on music, and most good bands don't get any grammy love anyway.

That U2 performance sucked, come on now! Jay-z and coldplay had potential but just sounded like crap. I dont think they practiced at all. And that pregnant chick singing should have been illegal. Stevie Wonder and the Jonas brothers was just funny, I have no comment to that.

Roadiohead was sick and got no love. But its tough going against Plant, the Grammys always favor older artists. I'm glad they call it "rap" instead of "hip hop" because if lil wayne won the "best hip hop album" of the year award KRS one and any other respectable MC (or a person who enjoys good hip hop) head would explode!

In an age of pure industry driven crap, it is nice to see genuine talent rise to the surface of Hollywood shit stew, and shine for one day. It's just so unbelievable that the Grammys can still be taken seriously. With the internet and the unprecedented power of the live show experience, the record companies, and "music industry" in general are losing more and more power every year. Thank God for bands like Radiohead who understand this, and use the "new media" to help change the way we connect to music. Hopefully the industry pimps keep losing their grip on the actual artists, so that eventually these artists can bring their art directly to us, with no middle man standing in the way.

I can't believe I watched this whole show. First of all, the whole thing was mostly covered with performances, which was cool in my mind, since last time I saw the Grammys (10 yrs ago) had mostly awards nobody even knew existed, but the performances were all the Jonas Bros, Coldplay, Miley friggin Cyrus shit, gotta love how the corperate commercial mickey mouse bullshit gets in the mix. Of course a lot of the shitty mainstream got the awards like Coldplay, I'm just glad they didn't win Album of the year. I stayed up to watch Radiohead and it was cool to have a college band back them up, but why didn't the other members besides Johnny join Thom Yorke, since they were all there. Mccartney was pretty sick and Katy Perry looked as fine as ever. All in all, I won't be watching this for probably another 10+ years...

JRP-please don't hate on Jerry Garcia or compare him to lil wayne (and i actually like lil Wayne). How could you call Jerry a "psychedelic nothing," a "junkie his whole life" and a bad father and bad husband? I know Jerry had a drug problem, but show some fucking respect. To refer to the man who created the entire genre of music to which this site is dedicated as a 'nothing,' is sheer blasphemy. Also, saying “don't get me wrong” doesn't excuse that type of outrageous rhetoric against a true musical genius who innovated rock music and is arguably the greatest guitar player to ever pick up the instrument.

That might be the first time those two names have ever been uttered in the same sentence, and its hopefully the last. Wow. I'm not even going to go any further, other than to say: Bob Marley/Juvenile, John Lennon/Master P, Bob Dylan/C Murder. Those would be equivalents to your ignorant-ass comparison.

dont get your panties in a bunch guys. first off i didnt call jerry a psychedelic nothing i said at least lil wayne is not that, unlike some jamband "heroes". second of all i did not compare lil wayne to garcia in any musical comparison, but both yall were to quick to judge any statement written about your god jerry. yes i was wrong to say he was a bad husband or father but it angers me reading some of the things people put on this website about other artists. my point was to say that people rip artists to shame on here yet are so bias to their own musical tastes that they cant open their eyes to negative things about their favorites. its just fucking music get over it. what if someones favorite artist is juvinile master p or c murder are you gonna call them an idiot. im sure you probably would. some of you people are so uptight about your music. i dont even like new rap that much i was just making a point... if you dont like todays music than go cry about it and listen to ratdog..

Your just digging yourself a deeper hole. But at least you have the sack to stand by your statement, which you are certainly entitled to. But by posting your opinions you are inviting critique. So you didn't compare Lil' Wayne to Jerry in a musical sense, but in what? Personal life? Legacy? A contribution of positive/negative to the universe? Seriously? Your still standing by that? Jerry was a junkie and a bad father? What makes you think Lil' Wayne is sober and a good father? The foundation of the Grateful Dead is love, harmoney and improvised artistic expression. The foundation of crunk, shit rap is materialism, violence, misogeny, and the dumbing down of a generation. So you still want to rip "uptight" people for bashing this absolute crap. Sorry, I'll take artists (Including true hip-hop artists) any day over crack dealers with no MC skills. So, excuse me, I now must go to my Ratdog show. I'm not ashamed of that.

Lil Wayne is decent on the pedal steel, but Jerry was better.

dude i did not say lil wayne was a good father i didnt say he was a good person or an awesome influence on anybody. he has however donated tons of money and time to the children of new orleans, so ya that kind of means something. jerry had plenty of negative aspects that were clearly made public also. singing about money & girls & sex isnt that much worse than being so fucked up on stage that his head keeps hitting the mic. he was an a role model for a lot of the peace loving people back then, and he made plenty of negative choices portraying himself as a junkie, as does lil wayne portraying himself as a selfish pimp. the point is popular music has always been popular music. back when it was cool to sing about love and peace many bands capitalized on that. most were adulterous to their wives, constantly fucked up, and cared little for what the sang about. lil wayne is not even close to one of my top artist, the grateful dead are way higher up i was trying to bring up a point that obviously was misunderstood or not comprehensible to you
