Las Tortugas '08 Schedule

EMERGING WEST COAST AUTUMN FEST ANNOUNCES PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

Allie Kral – Cornmeal
by Susan J. Weiand
With a line-up that includes ALO,Tea Leaf Green, The Mother Hips, Melvin Seals' JGB, Hot Buttered Rum, Cornmeal and festival hosts Blue Turtle Seduction, this year's Las Tortugas - Dance of the Dead III is shaping up to be one of the best gatherings this fall. The festival announced their performance schedule today, which can perused here.

Kicking off with Poor Man's Whiskey and the Dave Stein Bubhub on Thursday, October 30, the four-day festival runs until the wee hours of Sunday, November 2, when Blue Turtle ties a bow on the weekend. Last year's festival saw a high level of attendee participation with an eye-boggling array of costumes on Halloween particularly, and 2008's installment will continue the tradition with themes for each day.

2008 Las Tortugas Themes

Thursday: Welcome to the Jungle
Friday: Halloween Masquerade Ball/Costume Contest
Saturday: Naughty by Nature
Sunday: Gospel Jubilee

Festivalgoers are encouraged to freak freely on these loose concepts. So, Thursday's crowd may draw equally from Guns n' Roses as they do from Tarzan or the animal print section of the Frederick's of Hollywood catalog. One can only imagine how many people will be down with OPP on Saturday.

Other special parts of this year's festivities includes Victor Barnes' Biggrass Brunch and a solo set from TLG's Trevor Garrod on Sunday morning, and late night sets from two primo SF funk-estras, namely Monophonics (Fri) and BLVD (Sat), while Lebo and Friends will help folks greet the dawn on Thursday night.

The full lineup for Las Tortugas - Dance of the Dead II is:

I'm totally down with OPP....sleeping time is from dawn to afternoon. 4500ft in the Yellow/Pondersosa, November, easy sleeping temperature....better than Summer in many respects.

I saw Lebo jam with Tea Leaf Green at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass last weekend. It was so sick.

Thats it? hahahahaaaa nice try.....Hot BUttered Rum rules this village....Cornmeal gained many fans at High Sierra, theyre going to shine. ALO has a huge fan base and this is their major gigs back for 08. And Blue Turtle's hard work is going to pay off once again. I cant wait to see those guys again.

im so excited for Victor Barnes firepit twak:30 set! While they arent this huge breakthru band, they are great at all night shenanigans. The firepit is going to rule this year once again, but even moreso with the plans. Cant wait for the BLVD early morning. AHHHHH going to be so good to be back in Yosemite for Halloween. The schedules just right, with the tavern and Hall going off at the same time, giving the main big top stage a chance to breathe on its own, really. And Nat Keefe Sunset sets are going to be magical! Viva Tortugas!!!

Last year was one of the best musical experiences I've ever had. This year's lineup is even better! Wish I could make it down. If you do end up going, beware of da black bears!

This looks great! Anyone know how many people show up for this? do they cap the ticket sales? do they even need to?

There were less than 1000 people last year. Sooo intimate. By far, one of the best festivals I've ever been to. Zero drama, great fans, and just a perfect setting. Oh, and the music was amazing. If you can, GO!

I will next year. I love the smaller fests. I did check out the website after I posted. Looks like a kick ass place for a festival.

Great setting for a wonderful musical experience. I grew up in the area, so I am biased, but if you a debating going, do yourself a favor, and drive up. It is a true experience. By the way, the bears will bolt as soon as the 1st note is hit. Dawn is the bears' time, and WE ARE TAKING IT!!!!!

This is a great line up and is gonna be a great festival. There are so many great bands. The highlight for me and the biggest reason I am going is MONTANA SLIM STRING BAND! I highly recommend them, you will not be disappointed!
