Update: Dead Tour/Obama in PA

Obama Benefit on October 13 in Pennsylvania

Just a quick update on our story from earlier this week in regards to The Dead reforming to support Presidential hopeful Barack Obama. When we first reported there were no details available, today we learned that the boys will gather on October 13 at the Bryce Jordan Center at the Penn State campus in State College, PA. The date marks the first time in four years that Dead alumni Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart will have performed together.

The Dead To Tour In 2009
Obama Benefit on October 13

The Dead
Word on the Web is that the surviving fellas from The Grateful Dead — bassist Phil Lesh, guitarist Bob Weir, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann — are getting back together to tour in April and May of 2009. There are no further details available at this time and no indication who will join the core four to complete the lineup. Past lineups of The Dead and The Other Ones have included Warren Haynes, Steve Kimock, Mark Karan, Jimmy Herring, Susan Tedeschi, Joan Osborne, Jeff Chimenti and Rob Baracco amongst others.

Prior to any 2009 tour details, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart announced last Friday (8/29) that they will join together again on October 13 to perform a benefit concert for the Presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama, with the city, venue, special guests and other details to be determined pending further discussions with the Obama campaign.

Last February, Weir, Lesh and Hart performed together for the first time since 2004 at the hugely successful "Deadheads for Obama" show at The Warfield in San Francisco. Now founding Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann joins his musical brethren in service of this historic cause.

Stay tuned to dead.net for further details, ticket information, etc.

Mickey Hart Band and Phil and Friends were awsome this summer not to mention Ratdogs epic tour last summer with Kimock. I love Karan too, but kimock is the man.....If the dead gets back together, please put kimock on board!! GO OBAMA, check out his speech on youtube.com Made the hair on body stand on end.

Summertime....the 'who's playing with who' expert because he has *heard* plenty of dead shows....? Have you seen them?..Kimock has no current incarnation of SKB, but has graced the stage the last 6 to 8 months with more musicians than I can count, he has played with Billy, Mickey and Bobby (all in the last year). Easter Bunny? Maybe. Hey Summertime, did they call you and tell you this tour will have no new material? Please do spend your money on other up and comers and support the scene. That is about the only intelligent thing you had to say.

Summertime, You have no idea what you are talking about. To suggest that the remaining members of the Grateful Dead would tour for money is ridiculous. This band was never about the money. They were about making music and changing the world. They definitely dont need money now. I will go see them, and I will continue to seek out young vibrant musicians as well. Why does it have to be one or the other?

i am REALLY not trying to be negative here, and if you disagree i'm sorry, but to me it's a shame that the dead are reforming around politics rather than for their own artistic pursuits. Jerry would never have been a part of this, he always opted to remain politically inactive, I can't remember the quote exactly but it was something to the effect of "choosing the lesser of 2 evils is still choosing evil". I'm not saying obama is a bad candidate, but we all know that in order to be a major player in politics these days means compromising a lot of beliefs. The politicians who don't compromise are written off and don't stand a chance. It hope for the sake of the country that Obama is the man that the Dead sees him as, but I their music entwined so much with their political ideas, for me that is not the Grateful Dead and it will make the music a little bittersweet.

This is incredible, i really hope that they actually come within a few hours of where i live that would be superb because i am willing to go distance to catch these guys. The sad thing is though that i really love what the plf and ratdog are doing right now respectively, but then again the dead will be great. What i dont understand is why people are so insistent that they create new material, dont just create new songs for the hell of it, play them only if theyre good. that being said did i say that i cant wait for this

Who Cares if Jerry was politically inactive. seriously. was jerry a perfect human, he was an artist of all forms, and he was quite literate and he was a smart person, but to be uninvolved in politics because things are not perfect in this system is simply cowardice and an easy way out. Jerry is wrong for not caring about politics, as a citizen we should do what we can to change what we can, do whatever is in your power to control. I love that the dead in the abscense of jerry have started to care about what politics can do for the people that need it, and Obama is the guys that can finally do the things the dead have idealized since the 60's

BG when I read I usually go down the page and speaking of freedom I think the current executive administration has clearly taken away many of our freedoms while strengthening their executive power as to where the system of checks and balances has become a system of checks written out to anyone who will agree with their neo-con philosophy. Let's see Patriot Act, Wire Tapping, unlawful Firings, Indictments, dodging subpoenas, I think that our leaders should be responsible for their action do you not agree?

Matt and Trey of South Park said it best in there episode where the kids vote between a giant douche and a turd sandwich. Sure, it is obvious that Obama is the lesser or two evils, but I am really fucking sick of choosing between a douche and a turd. Give me someone who is going to make REAL change (Ron Paul!!), not more of the same demopublican politicians who are going to spend billions we don't have to make government even bigger on programs that don't work.

Awesome on the Dead Tour, but don't support the dude who isn't McCain because he isn't McCain. These 3rd party politicians who are not bound by the demo vs. repub banter really need your support, need some celebrity support to get their word out, and to let people know it is OK to vote 3rd party if we want REAL change.

Smashy Smashy - I used to share your sentiments. I voted for Nader 8 years ago. Guess what? It's a wasted vote. I don't see any change to the 2-party political system coming any time soon. There is no perfect candidate...especially not Ron Paul. I typically find that Ron paul supporters are rather eccentric conspiracy theorists without any empirical data to support their positions.

Sorry to break everyone's heart on this thread but, as much as i love the dead, supporting obama or mccain for that matter is absolutely rediculous. Obama is going to destroy this country justs bush has done and just mccain would as well. They are both bought and paid for by the military industrial complex, ie the bilderberg group and other globalist think tanks like the CFR and trilateral commission. I just want everyone out there to ask Bob Wier, WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU DOING AT BOHEMIAN GROVE!!! As much as i love the guy and his music, that question is too important in light of the fact that they are tossing support to a mainstream puppet candidate. BTW HoodooVoodoo, not to call you out but that conclussion that you just expressed is the conclussion that you have been herded too. This might be hard for you to accept but the reason why they give you two of the same candidates and call one democrat and one republican is so you either decide between a douche and a cunt or just say fuck it and not vote. So dont go saying a vote for ron paul or a vote for nader is a waste of time. In a constituitionalist republic(thats right, america is and never was a democracy, see thomas jefferson) we arent supposed to ahve to choose between twocandidatesthat teh elite choose for us. Stop being a fucking pussy, grow a set and start voting for people who make sense, instead of the scum bag dictators who are going to carry out the new world order agenda. Call me eccentric all you want, at least im not a fucking sheep like your dumbass. Look up these words on youtube, bilderberg, endgame, jordan maxwell, building 7, arron russo, america freedom to fascism, fabled enemies... Stop being so fucking stupid BTW, if you see the media creating a major candidate you can assume they are bad. Trust me, this assumption is always true... all of you out there who cant understand whatim talking about should think about jumping into the ocean, your too stupid to survive...

Soldier's Field tries VERY hard to not have concerts anymore, which is why most acts get sent to Northerly Island (which I once loved, but my last few trips there have been far less than a "fun time"). I'm guessing that if it's April and May, either Allstate Arena or perhaps even the Auditorium Theatre. I wouldn't doubt A Rothbury spot(if they Do have the fest again), or maybe a 2 or 3 night run at either Alpine or Deer Creek. Just hope it comes within a 2 hour drive to chicago.

Folks claiming that the lack of new music will equate to a "grab the money" tour apparantly know nothing about the development of material by the Grateful Dead. Since the beginning, studio albums were made up, primarily, of songs the group "worked out" live over the course of several years before releasing. This would not be possible in the context of a single planned spring tour. I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear a debut or two of a Hunter or Bobby song, but it's silly to think these guys who haven't even been in a room together for more than a half hour in the past four years would want to release an entire album of untested material.

And delaneyira, i understand your sentiment on everything in the world is fucking evil blah blah blah, BUT if you don't believe that votes for Nader were wasted votes and that we havn't been worse off having Bush in office vs. Gore or Kerry then you have missed the last 8 years. I agree that the 2-party system is fucked BUT to believe that it won't matter if Obama or Mccain is president is crazy. Obama is clearly standing for stopping the war and pulling troops unlike Mccain. That alone is reason enough in my book to support him. But if you are happier surfing youtube and wallowing in how the world is a helpless mess, have fun with that.

Just because the Grateful Dead in their heyday were against the establishment doesn't mean that they can't vote of support a person who they seem to think is a figure that can do a lot of good, and is going to try and bring america back on course to drive towards the vision it once was. It's not like they support every dem candidate, not like they toured for gore or kerry or the re election of clinton, but they see this dude as different. all people who are apathetic towards politics should just leave the country because they are not doing their duty as a person and citizen of the united states.

I don't if anyone caught it, but in the recent Rolling Stone interview with Obama on the cover he cites the Grateful Dead as a band that he likes when asked about what is on his ipod. Probably the first possible president that would ever say they actually like the Grateful Dead.

I dont mean to downplay the importance of politics in today's society...your involvement will undoubtedly determine the condition of our nation for (at least) the next four years to come...however, in regards to this article, i feel the focus should be more heavily directed towards the INCREDIBLE news that the DEAD will once again be hitting the road; and bringing along with them an allstar lineup that we should all be grateful to have the opportunity to see...thats just my opinion...............

"WHY I AM VOTING DEMOCRAT "

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

*I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

*I'm voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq , I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

*I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe three or four pointy-headed elitist liberals need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would NEVER get their agendas past the voters.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe that when the terrorists don't have to hide from us over there and come over here, I don't want to have any guns in the house to fight them off with.

*I'm voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I've decided to marry my horse.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 10% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 18.75% isn't.

*Makes you wonder why anyone would EVER vote Republican, now doesn't it?

Let me first say this! The dead live in Marin Co. as a past resident myself i can tell you it is extremly republican!!! secondly leave the music and the politics in their own separate places. The gRateful dead were anything but Political I bet jerry could be nothing but ashamed of this so-called stand!!! And really the best these guys can do is a dead cove band albeit the best dead cover band ever but still... I would go see em as I did when they played alpine and they ripped the wholy shiite out of the place!! But this political tour makes me ill! I dig the donor rap that phil has cause its a great cause having family that needed donation but this is a wreck! I fthey only knew what Obama was really about! Being originally from CHicago I can answer all your questions about who THE man reallyis! Try this on fer size. He was the lawyer to the slumlord of Chi-town !Obama was the lawyer that helped destroy then relocate all the projects in the south side and them distributed them among cities they never had a place in! Hows that for you? The man they are trying to elect is just another face-man. And let's not confuse the fact of how he became a Senator!! Thats even better. Go do your research and realize that hea and McCain arent that far apart! Blues for allah inshallah!!! Whatever will be , will be!!

you haters act like some of our most revered living icons just attach themselves to a political event cause they wanna be popular or something. they have never played such events ever before, and possibly, never will again. However, they have seen something in this (less then perfect human being, who isn't?) man that most Obama supporters have glimpsed. a chance. A chance to take just one little step away from business as usaual in washington. and little steps are all you can take in this day and age of politics. that's why 3rd party votes are just wasted at this point in time and only serve to elect the definately wrong guy.

washington is so very f'ed by the last administration, I don't envy anyone who has the task ahead of them.

If you consider yourself a fan of this music that is called jam, you must know that bashing Obama is like bashing the Grateful Dead. We trusted them all these years...why stop now?

And no offense to those who love him, but if Jackie Greene takes the lead, i will definitely pass. Good luck Jimmy Herring in TOO or TD or whatver they call it this week is about as likely as you encountering Tooth Fairy. Jimmys gig *IS* WSP now. It is his to lose. Jimmy lives in GA. WSP is based in GA. Much simpler than flying out to SFO for rehearsals or whatever with TOO or TD or PL&F or whatever.

OVERALL:

First is there a single planned tour? Dead.net the official source for GD, TOO, TD news makes no such specific mention, yet Faux news, jambands.com, jambase.com, etc speculate that there is in fact one? We'll see.

Second, the development of material by the gd and too or td are two seperate things.

because they are two seperate bands.

not the same at all.

the grateful dead actually *released* brand new albums with new material regularly.

whereas the other ones, the dead, etc have never released an album because they have not developed new material even though they have had the chance over the course of 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, & 2004. yet they did not TAKE the chance over the course of opportunties they had during all of those years.

A song or two debut does not/would not creativity make. 10-12 songs then maybe we're talking.

And what it is even sillier is to think that these guys who haven't even been in a room together for more than a half hour in the past four years let alone rehearsed for that amount of time would decide to do a full blown tour.

Obama benefit is going down on Oct 13th in State College PA.

Bob, Phil, Bill and Mickey to Play Obama Benefit on October 13th (UPDATE)

For Immediate Release

September 2nd, 2008

Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart announced today that they will join together again on October 13th to headline a benefit concert for the Presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama, at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, PA. Also appearing will be the Allman Brothers Band, plus opening act to be determined.

Last February, Weir, Lesh and Hart performed together for the first time since 2004 at the hugely successful "Deadheads for Obama" show at The Warfield in San Francisco. Now founding Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann joins his musical brethren in service of this historic cause, with Warren Haynes and Jeff Chimenti rounding out the band.

A Dead tour would be cool but supporting a candidate who supports the institutionalized racism that is affirmative action is retarded. Maybe some of you like to be blatently discriminated against but I don't. Musicians and actors all support Obama because they don't live in the real world. Orpheus.. Do you always vote for who "brings you LSD and music" wants you to vote for? All we are saying is someone should tell us how Obama is going to make change and what exactly is he planning on doing. And if an artist supports him, I think it is appropriate that they know this too. So far everything he has suggested is old news, makes the fed. government even bigger and wastes plenty more money we don't have. It's what Bush and McCain do minus the war in Iraq, but just watch it will be a new war somewhere else. It always is with these same old politicians.

I think the members of GD should spend a shitload of cash sitting in the studio to release new material....with record sales declining year after year as well as our ability to listen to over produced studio CRAP I pray for new material and a studio release....something like Go To Heaven or Built to Last would be killer!! To all the people hating on Obama in this thread, don't worry, it sounds like when election day rolls around, he'll probably lose anyway. It's all a bunch of bull shit spin doctoring, and most people don't even understand the issues. Its just that republicans tend to be more aggressive and better at the spin. That being said, it is amazing to me that SINCE most people don't understand the issues, the guy who most closely resembles GWB is going to win, boggles the mind. Since both candidates are essentially the same aside from the normal bullshit talking points that only come up in campaign season, I would think that people would vote for Obama just b/c he's a dem and that is the closest we'll get to "change" in this country. Oh well, I guess having a 78 yr-old shell-shocked multi-millionaire and the mayor of a 6,000 pop. town in alaska as the no. 1 and 2 in charge won't be so bad. sigh. No Jeremy myths don't enter my mind or home.

Jimmy would have to have an olive branch extended to him as well by Phil or vice versa. He didn't leave PL&F's on the best terms.

Jimmy also has a brand new solo album(his first) coming out here in a month and a half which he has hinted will result in a supporting tour. He has a wife, 2 children, a motorcycle, fishing, & WSP to take up his time next year. If he gets really antsy maybe some ARU gigs.

Apparently the composers of the articles on www.jambase.com news section have visions of the tooth fairy(myths) because neither www.dead.net nor www.widespreadpanic.com(the one and only news item dated today has no mention whatsoever right now) mention anything about what has been reported here recently. And jambands.com for that matter.

Jimmy says this:

"Well, you probably know this about me Dean, I may have even talked to you about this before. I’m just not any good at spreading myself thin. Something’s gonna suffer if you try to do too much at one time, you’re gonna hit that syndrome: jack of all trades master of none. I like to do one thing at a time and this is the exception, even me doing this record during Panic’s time off, I normally wouldn’t be doing something like that."

I'll believe it when I see it on wsp.com only.

the problem bowlegged texan is not that you shouldn't be a dead fan if your not extremely liberal, it is more simply that if you enjoy the way in which the grateful dead approached music, and this is the way that they approached many other things as well. If you enjoy the logic behind the culture of the grateful dead, then it is not being liberal it is simply being free to do whatever, free form, improvisation, these are brought about by not having restrictions. Just lift the veils of ignorance, and you get the release of the burden of restriction. but what the hell did i just say?

Well guys, this is coming from someone who sees the Grateful Dead as one of the biggest musical inspirations in his life and who believes that they should be the band that unites all of us purely out of the goodness that is live music! I must say that after learning that Barak Obama (three days after Russia decided to invade Georgia) said that the United Nations should be the decision makers on how to deal with this conflict, even though Russia has the veto power in the UN, I now believe that Barak is completely incapable of having the intelligence to run this country! In fact, I doubt in his ability to be a Senator! I have been waiting for another tour for so long and I am heartbroken about this! But, I will not be giving any of my money in support for this media tool. All of you can say what you will but that is my stance.

I think that keeping those oil rights out of the hands of Russia is the biggest priority of the issue. Russia already controls most of the oil that is going into Europe and that is the main reason that the EU has not proposed sanctions against Russia over this conflict. After Russia's continued support for barbaric dictatorships like Iran and Venezuela, the World does not need a European monopoly on oil from the likes of Putin's puppet, Medvedev.

I'm alarmed that anyone would call Cesar Chavez a barbaric dictator. It is obvious to me that whoever believes this just listens to the biased American Media rather than the real poor people of Venezuela. Venezuela has over 80% of its population that is extremely poor (our standards of poor in the US don't even compare) and Chavez has done more for these people and his country than anyone else! That is why he is democratically elected by an over 80% of the population, quite different than the US where a 55% victory is considered a landslide.

I support the dead and I support Obama. This hits me right in the heart in a good way. The last show the dead played in support of Obama was by far the best stuff they've done in a long time. Anyone who feels disinclined to vote this election is on the wrong side of history imo and in 20 years when your grandkids ask "Hey gm/gf, were you part of the needless aggression and bankrupting of America, our part of the biggest realistic catalyst to change seen in years, perhaps ever? I know what my answer will be.I can't believe some people here could careless about the war and the devastation of our 1 only planet.

Music makes my life happy and worthwhile, but is abysmally small in importance compared to the issues facing us today.

Anyway, glad to have a chance to see the boys again...hope they rehearse first, hope Jackie doesn't play (he's great backing the Mother Hips or solo, however), hope Bobbie's voice doesn't fart out (like it has many times in the last few years I've seen him), glad Billy is back, and mostly hope Obama doesn't turn out to be a dud...

I love the Grateful Dead, but as time passes by more and more the Dead begins to smell like a nostalgia act. The best recent GD offshoot stuff IMHO has been the Rhythm Devils. Why? New music, new sound. The Dead need to incorporate both if they want an upcoming tour to be at all musically relevant and not just an excuse to indulge. I'll probably go to one (and only one) local show for the novelty of it. I need to start saving now for an eventual Phish comeback, I don't have the funds to waste going on Dead tour to hear Bob Weir sing Wharf Rat.

I haven't read all the posts, but this is my two cents...

When is the purpose of a concert NOT to indulge?

Many folk songs are played to this date that have been around for generations and generations. Why does our culture have to be out with the old in with the new? I think music is timeless, and the greatful dead has made some masterpeices that have a special magic to them live. You might as well say orchestras should cease to continue playing the great symphonies put together by composers who died hundreds of years ago.

If there is an audience for it, why deny them the right to enjoy it? Why critisize them?

I can't believe anyone would give summertime a hard-time for stating the obvious - there's no way a Dead tour is for anything other than nostalgia, unless it's for money! I won't go so far as to say it IS for money, because I'd like to think a little bit more about the remaining members of one of my favorite bands of all time, but let's be honest - there's a CRUCIAL ingredient missing from this band, and it's the guitar player that was its spirit since its inception. And, yes, speaking of that guitar player, he made music for the sake of music, and chose to keep himself, and his band, politically inactive.

Whether or not it was the right decision, or even an acceptable one, for the remaining members to put themselves out there in support of Obama, is really not our decision to make - it's between Bobby, Phil, Mickey, Billy, and Jerry's ghost.

And, yes, every Deadhead or any fan of improvisational music knows that setlists *can* be all but irrelevant, but give summertime a little more credit - I'd like to think he's demanding new material not because he's bored hearing sick jams come out of Dark Stars, but because those haven't BEEN coming as of late, and he wants an indication that there's still some vibrant creative spirit left in The Other Ones.

SHEESH, people, the bottom line is that The Dead are going to tour, they're also going to back Obama, and, no matter how you feel about their motivations, you'll get to go see them if you want to (and most people on this website probably wouldn't say no if they were handed a ticket), and their support of Obama is something I doubt anyone on this website is all that upset with (again, disregarding Jerry's original intents for the political stance of the band).

Love the dead of course and would love to see them but don't understand why they or other bands align themselves with politicians. I am not voting for Obama and hate to think that my attending a concert some how is in support of a candidate and and not for my own enjoyment. I would feel the same way if it where in benefit for my candidate. These are two areas in my life which are completely separate. Getting people to vote(headcount) is a unifying cause for music, benefiting a specific candidate is anything but.

Mickey, Phil, Bob, Bill, I love you guys. Thank you. I know your music does not intend to involve the cumbersome and dominating illusionary ideals of USA politics, but this time around the entire world is calling on us to somehow put Obama in the most powerful office on the planet. Thank you, with tears in my eyes for bringing the family together for this moment in history. The GRATEFUL DEAD have channeled a higher sound which carries a universal message. Fans, put your egos aside. It's 2008, nobody has time for your musical politics. The band is not doing this for your night of reminiscence, but likely for a much deeper vision which is simply out of their decision-making hands. There is a Chinese proverb which suggests that only every 500 years is an enlightened emperor found. This may be that case with Obama in this globalized world. Hidden under all the bureaucratic tactics of the campaign, there may lie a last chance for a species capable of seeing heaven on earth. Please, let down your egos, if only for a short moment in the world's history. This is not about your one-night reunion. We are talking about beings of light (members of the Dead) who have channeled a vision for over 40 years. This vision is more about the spirits all over the globe. Are you a true LISTENER to the message in the musical notes or just another groupie? These subtle moments show your true colors. Universal love and nature's gift is the message in the music. Minuscule opinions are dangerous. Take responsibility for your love of the ancient sounds coalesced; let it be, may the sound alone heal our hearts and help us transform all our deeds into love.

I am very excited to hear that the dead are going to be playing a show and touring again. I am not very excited to hear that it is for Obama. I think that the Dead will later regret endorsing an elitist candidate such as Obama. I recommend that all deadheads and Obama supporters check out a guy named Ron Paul. He actually believes in freedom and liberty and has the voting record to prove it. Noa & steve. I can't help but ask if you missed the words "may" and "emperor" in my last post? The two "may"'s are intentionally placed to suggest my own skepticism of how an Obama presidency might play out. The "emperor" association should account for your concerns of "elitism". I'm not suggesting that emperors are not elitist with their own forceful agenda...that is in the definition of emperor. Are you quick to jump the gun? Does my interpretation of the Dead's sound not resonate with you? Did you miss the parts about the message of love embedded in the music, or does politics override all else with the two of you? My question is, are the two of you privileged, disgruntled haters who think McCain should lead the most powerful nation on the planet earth? Or are the two of you anarchists that believe even Obama should not be supported by the Dead. The latter i have literally seen while listening to the sound of the grateful dead...as is hinted in "your (the dead)music does not intend to involve the cumbersome and dominating illusionary ideals of USA politics". If you are the anarchist spirit, i am with you in daily activity, but you have contradicted yourselves by jumping on the political versus the love in music tip of the post. As for Deadheads who wish to vote for McLame, you must be those who just missed the whole message all these years and have trampled on our family for a night out on the town. Your spirits are lost, and you are angry.

Okay, now that I've read this and some of the insanely offensive remarks by supposedly peace-loving Deadheads, here's what I have to say...

If you don't support Obama, cool. Don't go. If you do, cool. Go if you want to. If you think the boys are selling out - ask yourself why they'd do a gig "just for money" and donate the proceeds to the Obama campaign? That makes no sense to me - other than they're in it for the money TO GIVE TO THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN. And, if you disagree with what they're doing, don't go. You're gonna put them down for having an opinion? You're going to say they're past their prime, yet you take the time to read this story because you have - apparently - no interest in a bunch of old dudes who just can't play anymore? Morons.

Leave what they do alone, if you don't agree with it. Jesus....these guys play together as a band for 30 years, continue to do their best after Jerry passes and they get ridiculed from a bunch of people who don't have the right to judge. That makes sense.

John McCain is a dirty politician. Read up, people. Read up. If you want specifics of BOTH candidates' plans for this country - just visit their websites. They both get into detail (McCain not as much). Obama lays it out. You can download the whole thing and read how he plans to have his plans paid for. The 2 candidates are VASTLY different on ALL major issues, if you knuckleheads would take the time to ACTUALLY READ their policies, rather than taking FoxNews's word, or CNN's word for it.

Ron Paul....yeah, he can get things done. I'll be in Penn State rockin' for Obama and enjoying a show put on by my musical heroes.

Josh, saying Obama was endorsed by hamas does nothing to de-legitimize Obama's policies, you're making a fallacious argument. If the KKK were to endorse John McCain, as I suspect they would given the context of this election, does that suddenly make everything McCain says lose its meaning?

No, that's stupid. Learn to pay less attention to the irrelevant political smearing and slandering and non-issues they saturate the media with and try focusing more on the actual logic and record of the candidates.

If Larry is playing guitar for the reunion tour, I'm not going. Please bring in Bruce Hornsby or Kyle Hollingsworth, Joan, and Kimock or Scofield (or Kang) to round out the band.

I hope they leave all the Ratdog and Phil and Friends players home... each band was equally LAME this year.

iwanttogetfunkedup- If it wasn't for the internet, you would have no clue who Ron Paul was. It was not the media who promoted on Ron Paul, it was the internet. And last time i checked, the "internet" wasn't a single, privately owned corporation that is dependent on outside funds. The internet didn't fund Ron Paul. He used it as a tool to get his message out. If it wasn't for the internet no one would know about him. The same can't be said for Obama. The candidates you constantly see on TV are there for a reason. You don't bite the hand the hand that feeds you. Obama is nothing but a STRAWMAN for the central bankers. Take the time and read one of Ron's books and compare it to one of Obama's books. Oh wait, he has only written one. :P Peace!

pappy- When I say that Obama and McCain are the same, I mean that they are both bought. You say to check out their "policies". I'm guessing you are referring to their websites..?? or maybe speeches..? Lets take it back to the first George Bush election. If you remember, George was promoting a humble foreign policy and no nation-building. That was his "policy"....but what happened?? The exact opposite. They all say things like that. What makes you think this year is going to be different? Because Obama said "change" 10,000 times? No. The man is a fraud, and I stand tall behind my words. Just look at his voting record. I think it's funny that Biden has OPENLY admitted multiple times that he is friends with McCain. America needs to realize that all these puppets "belong to the same hand".

Please let me clarify. I think Larry is great multi-instrumentalist. I've seen him a number of times, including with Dylan. He was great with Levon Helm this year and loved the Phil band with him and Barry Sless/Chris Robinson. In fact, I think the shows of a few years ago with Sless/LC were better WITHOUT Trey. ( not a Treyter, but I used to see Phish in bars in the NE 1988-89... back when their songs had few words and lonnng freaky jams)) LC as a lead improv-jam quitarist? No thanks. There is no "lift off" or transcendant soloing, just my opinion.

I've seen WSP with Houser, SCI, JGB, The PLQ, Kingfish, Feat, Creek, Bob and Rob, ABB, Moe, Bisco, TLG, AOD, Allmans with Dickey, Allmans w/ Herring, Allmans w /Derek and Warren, Mule on and on.... and like them all. My resume is excellent.

I stick by my statement that Phil's band this year is soft and Ratdog has been lame for years.

Mickey Harts's band was totally great this year.

Hilarious.

It appears that the www.jambase.com fascist censors in San Francisco, CA, of all places, removed everyones posts with the word "jew" in them.

Hahaha.

The context of the way the word jew was used by the person was as a descriptive term only. There was no malicious intent involved. jew is *NOT* a race. It is a religion. So as for an argument of it being a "racist" term then that argument holds no water at all whatsoever. "Offensive"? Well how pray tell does jambase literally define their version of the word "offensive". Merely using jew as an adjective to describe *WHO* it was that controlled the world, as the poster did, is not cause for removal. That is not anything at all like saying something to the tune of, "I hate them and the reason I hate them is because they are jewish".

Hardly.

Oh fascist censors have you not ever been to a comedy club with an unpolitically correct stand up comedian? Wimps. Looks like the fascist censors at www.jambase.com need to go back and take critical thinking 101. And those who reported that poster need to grow some hide. Weinies.

To all you nay sayers out there this is quite simple . . . the reason that Phil is lacking, and the reason that Bobby shows tend to be more like a lounge act is because They need to be on the same stage at the same time! Phil once said that the members of the Grateful Dead were like fingers on a hand. This is what I've been waiting 13 years for, and politics aside I will be attending this show, and if they tour I will be at every show shaking my bones and celebrating the life of a person that has brought great happiness into my life.

Jewish identity includes characteristics of both an ethnicity and religion. According to halakhic law matrilineal descent (a child takes the identity from the mother)is one of these characteristics of identity. It doesn't matter what religious beliefs that child takes later on in life, it is still considered Jewish. However, conversion to Judaism is also a characteristic that makes someone Jewish.

Being Jewish is not a race because Jews do not share one common ancestry or biological distinction. People of many different races have become Jewish people over the years.

I have never heard a Jewish person refer to themselves as being of the "Jewish race" until on this thread. I guess there is a first for everything.

So if you are Jewish have you ever referred to yourself as of the "Jewish race" to someone else out loud? If you have not then would you and why specifically would you? What makes you a race in your own personal eyes? How do you define race?

Wow! I personally find it hard to believe that you have not heard the notion of Jews having a common ancestry. First of all, the belief of all Jews is that they all descend from the line of Jacob, or Israel who was the son of Issac, who was the son of Abraham. The very word Jew, comes from a term used to define the people of Judea, the sons of Judah. By the way, how could there possibly be a nation of Israel if the Jewish people are not an ethnicity? It's pretty difficult to create an entire nation out of one religious belief and in the case of Israel this is definitely not the case.

“Being Jewish is not a race because Jews do not share one common ancestry or biological distinction.” - Actually they do, ancient Israelites (also known as Hebrews).

"How do you define race?"

A race is a biological subspecies, or variety of a species, consisting of a more or less distinct population with anatomical traits that distinguish it clearly from other races. This biologist's definition does not fit the reality of human genetic variation today. We are an extremely homogenous species genetically. As a matter of fact, all humans today are 99.9% genetically identical, and most of the variation that does occur is in the difference between males and females and our unique personal traits. This homogeneity is very unusual in the animal kingdom. Even our closest biological relatives, the chimpanzees have 2-3 times more genetic variation than people. Orangutans have 8-10 times more variation.

It is now clear that our human "races" are primarily cultural creations, not biological realities. The commonly held belief in the existence of human biological races is based on the false assumption that anatomical traits, such as skin color and specific facial characteristics, cluster together in single distinct groups of people. They do not. There are no clearly distinct "black", "white", or other races.

The popularly held view of human races ignores the fact that anatomical traits supposedly identifying a particular race are often found extensively in other populations as well. This is due to the fact that similar natural selection factors in different parts of the world often result in the evolution of similar adaptations.

Historically in the Western World, human "races" have been defined on the basis of a small number of superficial anatomical characteristics that can be readily identified at a distance, thereby making discrimination easier. Focusing on such deceptive distinguishing traits as skin color, body shape, and hair texture causes us to magnify differences and ignore similarities between people. It is also important to remember that these traits are no more accurate in making distinctions between human groups than any other genetically inherited characteristics. All such attempts to scientifically divide humanity into biological races have proven fruitless.

It is (hopefully) clear that people, not nature, create our identities. Ethnicity and supposed "racial" groups are largely cultural and historical constructs. They are primarily social rather than biological phenomena. This does not mean that they do not exist. To the contrary, "races" are very real in the world today. In order to understand them, however, we must look into culture and social interaction rather than biology.

No one, aside from skinheads and klan members, ever says “Jewish race.” The Jewish PEOPLE are an ethnoreligious group.

Do yourself a favor and conduct a little research before you spout off anymore myopic and offensive BS.

Where does that "belief" come from? Just because they "believe" that then how *DO* all(and I mean every single one of them?) Jewish people know, in fact, that they *DO* come from one single line? And where did *THAT* single line come from before it? Israels formation=UN GA vote.

Spridal69 did you copy and paste all of that from some unnamed source on the WWW or is it *YOUR* personal definition?

Spridal69 how does *your* definition of race above such as with the sentence, "All such attempts to scientifically divide humanity into biological races have proven fruitless", make Jewish people a "race" by scientific definition? It doesn't. That sentence basically implies that scientifically there is *NO* race, period.

Which is what I personally believe, that there is NO race.

We are all humans.

So with no race how can there be a "racist or otherwise offensive remark" on www.jambase.com?

How does www.jambase.com define "offensive" and "racist"? And what were the scientific grounds for www.jambase.com's removal of the original posters comment where that person merely claimed that Jewish people supposedly control the world?(those questions are for jambase actually)

The word Jew was only used to describe who it was. The poster didn't say(by use of the word Jew) or even imply directly or indirectly that they hated or had a problem with Jewish people because of their religion. How was that person "racist" with their comment if there is no race? How was their comment "offensive"? What made it "offensive"? Do tell, please?

& how was anything that *I* said "offensive"? I merely started a discussion asking questions. I did *NOT*, as you put it, "spout off offensive BS". I don't hate anyone so whatever.

Wow, i didn't know that my correction of ignorance would spark such bulls**t. Summertime, i know people that are Jewish who do not practice the religion. Before we helped establish the current state of Israel, yes the Jews were spread out all over Europe. Years and years before that, they did origniate where they now have a state and then some. Whether or not you are religious, it is a fact that there is a bloodline of Jesus. Abraham had two sons, Isaac and Ishmail. Isaac was with his wife and is a decendent of the Jewish race. Ismail was from an affair with a slave woman that started the Arab race. According to the Old Testament or the Torah, the Arabs were cursed as a result of what their father Abraham did, which created what we have today a war between the Arabs and the "infidels". Many Jews did convert to Christianity, but it does not change who they are a decendent of. The bloodline since Abraham and Sarah were passed down through the mother. That is why Isaac was jewish and so forth and Ishmail was an arab, passed down through his mother. There are not as many pure Jews in the world, like there are many many other mixed races as well. They can convert their religion or be non-religious and still be referred to as being Jewish. I don't have enough time to write out the entire bloodline for you, but even the father of Christianity (Jesus Christ) was Jewish. Whether you believe in him or not, he is proven to have lived and is part of our history. I have probably 5 different descendents in me, so races have evolved over history. You can argue whatever you want, but if you are going around bashing Jewish people then you are spreading hate. That is just the same as bashing anyone elses both race and/or religion. The is enough hateful fascists in the world, we don't need one on Jambase in an article about The Dead (who are about peace, love, and freedom - not hate and ignorance)

Definition: race (n) a human population considered distinct based on physical characteristics. Many Jews, religious or non, share physical characteristics. I'm not going to argue anymore, but pick up the Old Testament and read it if you want to argue anymore. I don't want to hate on anyone whether it's race, religion, and/or any differences, that's the problem in this world, to much hate.

As for The Dead and Allmans for Obama, I hope tickets go on sale soon, becuase i already have my hotel room booked and am ready to dance. I just want to go and have a good time and get along with everyone, even Republicans. Peace, Love, and Music.

The Jewish people have been persecuted more then any other group of people of people in the world. I am religious, so i'm not going to argue who's right and who's wrong, because i believe what i believe. I don't think jambase is fascist for taking down your hateful comments, i think you are hateful for saying them. You argue about stand up comedians saying what they want, well Klan members say what they want to, Hitler did to,so does Aminijaad (if i spelled that right). I'm sure we are all more similar then different, but God separated us and gave us different languages after the Tower Of Babel was built, because man wanted to create a tower up to God, but if race didn't exist there would be no racism. It's a great idea, remind of the song Imagine, but unfortunately it does so we need to learn to get along and try not to offend people for being who they are.

AIN'T NO TIME TO HATE, BARELY TIME TO WAIT.

cliftonhanger pray tell where *I* specifically bashed a supposed race or a religion in any of *MY* comments?

AGAIN since it keeps being ignored by you everyone else in here: The so called "offensive" comment came from the poster who remarked that Jews controlled the world. NOT at all from *ME*. The word Jew was only used to describe who it was. I am not hateful at all whatsoever.
