Y'all are crazy. Panic is great w/ or w/o Jimmy. We are just fortunate to see him with other great artists to feed off each other.

Either way though, this solo album is going to be sick. Trucks and Rodgers jamming with Jimmy in the studio! Hell yeah!

Yeah, Jimmy IS the shit, but all you panic haters who say he carries the band, you don't know what you're talking about. If people stuck with this band after mikey died, why would any change in guitar player now make them want to stop? Panic is not about jimmy, he adds a great new vibe, but the roots still go much deeper. If Luther got the job, theyd be blowing up, if Marc Ford got the job (which would have been sick, if you ask me), they'd still be blowing up, and if georgemac were still in there, they'd STILL be blowing up. And NappySCI, with a screename like that, wouldn't expect much more from you, but you could'nt be more wrong. Shit, the only lineup change that would kill it for me is if they put Mike Kang on lead ukelele. My band's on tour right now, where's yours? And Vollostcom, go ahead and take it easy on Widespread Panic day. Panic fans will be partying, cause thats what the fuck we do, and we do it better than anyone else. Yeah.

good to see herring doing so many things these days. he wasn't nearly as active years ago when he was teaching so much. i agree with waker that its a little ridiculous to say that he carries panic. he's the best guitar player they've ever had, but they will always be fun no matter who is up there doing it. don't bring sci into it though waker, that's the exact kind of crap posting that pisses me off. give props to your band. if you don't like another one that's fine, but don't bash them, especially when this story has absolutely nothing to do with them.

Michael Kang shits on Panic, and this is coming from someone who just got back from all three nights of Panic at Red Rocks. Who gives a shit if Panic is on tour and Cheese isnt? That doesnt mean a damn thing. I love Jimmy Herring but as far as Panic goes - I cant exactly tell the difference between a good version of a Panic song or a bad version of a Panic song. They go out and play their music the same way they played it the time before.

I had a blast at Red Rocks, but Widespread Panic is not a perfect band like Waker thinks. Phish isnt on tour. Does that mean Panic is better than them? (you still would probably think so.) If Kang joined Panic I would think less of Kang and more of Widespread Panic.

With no disrecpect to anyone, this thread is about Jimmy Herring and his first solo album which features so many of his close friends, Oteil, derek trucks, jeff sipe, kofi, greg osby.

Lets not compare about WSP or Phish or String Cheese. Music cannot be compared and certainlyly Jimmy Herring likes most music. When I spoke to him a while ago, he was a genuine guy, appreciated all music but considered Miles Davis , Allan Holdsworth, Col Bruce, Albert Ayler and others to be folks he looked up to . Not only in the jam band worls, people in jazz , rock and fusion fields respect Jimmy and consider him to a serious force in music...

So we are excited to hear some gems from Jimmy Herring

You guys are missing the point...Panic's problem is that they can never achieve greatness with such a pathetic drummer. Todd Nance is the single worst drummer in rock & roll today. No dynamics, no technique, no imagination, no creativity, same damn drum fill for every damn song, yada yada. Being a drummer, it's painful watching the artificial ceiling he puts on their music. My man Jimmy is doing his best trying to get the boys to launch off, but Todd has no ability to take the band anywhere.

...Jeff Sipe with Panic...if they ever hope to take their music to the next level.

So many of you guys need to grow up. Real music is not a popularity contest, regardless of which band(s) are our favorites most of us feel it in our soul when they are jamming and that is what really matters. Worry less about posting bullshit attacking the musicians that we as a community look up to and more about going and seeing whatever live music it is that makes you happy. If you really need to bitch there are plenty of better things to complain about. Remember what music and this scene is really about.

"you obviously did not see last night's panic setlist."

No but I bet it looks a lot like one of their setlist from 1995. Yeah they mix it up nite to nite but fuck man they are still playing all the same songs nite in and nite out that they were playing when i was 12. Addition is not progression and actually in my mind pulling in Jimmy was kinda a cop-out. Didn't they just put out a album with NEW material? Im not sure if they did but either when was the last time they put out a studio album with all new material on it before now, like the 90's? I may be wrong though but all i know is I would be pissed if my band never released any new material and was still playing the same shit they were playing 10 years ago.

Project Z was kind of a solo Herring album, and amazing. To a lesser extent Frogwings was, albeit a superband, but Derek and Jimmy really shone on that album (and the other live recordings)

All the debate about "best guitarist" is so pointless and childish. I like to think of it this way. Most of these major people we all listen to are ten out of ten stars. Once you reach a certain level it's just about taste.

My favorite guitar player (besides myself) is Bill Frisell, and when is the last time jambase did an article on him? Rarely.

Don't tell the band - 2001

Ball - 2003

Earth to America - 2006

Free Somehow - 2008

Seems like you could take 30 seconds to check before posting such an ignorant comment. I think 4 albums of new material in 7 years is respectable especially considering the loss of a founding member from cancer.

Music is an awesome thing why are you Idiots on here shittin on stuff you have no fuckin clue about. Like I said before people who come on Jambase to bitch about how this or that sucks. YOU HAVE NO LIVES and have no idea what good music and good vibes are about. If you like something talk about that fuck all of you and your negativity. Panic are awesome, Phish is awesome, DMB is awesome, Umprhey's is awesome,ect.... Go to youporn and take a load off cause all of you naysayers probably havn't ever been laid. Thats why you are such assholes!

i find this whole thing funny, i started this so lets continue. chap420 why do you use the term "good vibe" and then end "you are all assholes" (hmmm)? the point of this whole post situation is so people can leave their opinion, hence the "add your comment" section. everyone likes different things, everyone wants to see different people get together and jam. if someone doesn't like a band they have the right to express it. even worse is instead of talking about music you all start yelling and cursing at each other. if someone else doesn't like your band, WHO CARES. you still like them right? i've been to five wsp shows, i've been miracled in to two shows. i've walked out of three shows. no disrespect but mikey wasn't that good of a guitarist, may he rest in peace in a beautiful meadow. this whole band has gotten famous off of other peoples songs. did we forget about bloodkin. all the heat they bring our covers. the fans, while i have met some great ones, they are the only fans that have stickers and shirts that have their band's symbol crushing another band's symbol. Thats pushin' the good vibe right? some bands make you groove and some don't. if i want to write about it i will (because that what this is here for)! but i don't attack people, talk down to them, tell them their opinion is wrong (even though i might not agree). all the musicians are talented, thats why their on stage, and we are in the crowd. there is also greatness! some have it and some(JB,Nance,Jojo) don't. yes jimmy is the shit! and so is schools and sonny. there is just some place i'd rather be and somebody else i want to be seeing. now with that said i guess i'll try to figure out what this "getting laid" thing Chap420 was talking about is.

Chap420 Sat 7/5/2008 11:29AM

I was only talkin about the people that Insult the musicians. Its not cool and that is not what this board is for. People should keep there negative opinions to themselves! I shouldn't have called them assholes but I knew Mikey and it hurt when he passed and when people Insult him that sucks. I don't think they got famous off of other people's songs. Yes theywere a cover band at the start but they have wrote a hell of alot of good music. My ? is why people come on hear to bash bands. If you don't like something don't go see it and if you've seen something you don't like don't go see it again. It's like people come on here cause they think they know everything about a band and they really don't. Why ruin a good vibe for someone else by pushing your negative opinion. Thats all!

So the general consensus is that Panic was completely screwed until Jimmy Herring blessed them and did a favor by playing for them. Let us not forget that Widespread Panic is the biggest touring jamband there is now that Phish, String Cheese, and most other bands cant get along and quit. The guitar position for panic is a much better paying gig than anything else Herring could do, and I dont think that is because all the other members in panic suck. You guys bash on Todd and say he is this worthless musician, how about Mosely for SCI. He is like the worst bass player in history. Lets face it, Panic knows how to make it work, and they sound sick as hell right now so they shouldnt change a thing. I just hope Herrings solo stuff doesnt effect Panic Tour.

NappySCI said: "i've been to five wsp shows, i've been miracled in to two shows. i've walked out of three shows. no disrespect but mikey wasn't that good of a guitarist"

1.)There were a hundred people outside that wouldn't have walked out and would have loved all three of those shows. Stop coming to Panic shows, there'll be more room for me, and one less wook that didn't bathe to make me gag.

2.) We could go on for hours, you telling me mikey wasn't that good, me telling you that michael kang is a trey clone playing a smaller guitar, and neither one of us would convince the other, but Mikey was an incredible guitar player who sounded like no one but Mike Houser in both his tone and phrasing, which is a nearly impossible thing to do.

Not all bands are for all people, clearly. I've seen panic close to 75 times, the reason I keep coming back is for the same reason that anyone does, because the music has magic in it (for me). The dead had the same type of magic, do did phish. I just don't feel it in the same way with any of these other bands, but if you do, more power to you i guess. But please don't tell me Panic, or any of its members past or present suck. It ain't true. Hundreds of other bands have come and gone in the time that panic has ruled this genre, that alone is testament to the fact that they don't suck, you just don't get it, which is cool, but stop hatin.

Lastly, to the guy that commented that Todd Nance is a shitty drummer. I found it interesting this guy mentioned he was a drummer. Dude, I'm not a drummer, so maybe you're right, but I've actually heard the same exact criticism of Mickey Hart/Bill Kreutsmann, and Ringo Starr. So, there's four drummers that apparantly "suck". They play in Panic, the Dead, and the Beatles, so my question is I guess, how do all these shitty drummers end up in such kick ass/successful bands when awesome drummers like you end up on the comment board on Jambase? Hmmm.

Frogwings will NEVER tour again. At least not one with the members from the last lineup. The members current projects keep them WAY to busy. And I'm glad as I like the dTb better and wouldn't help to support a Frogwings tour. Plus much like another supposed "supergoup" who disbanded(Blind Faith), they don't really have all that much material to tour with.

after hearing wsp at all good i gotta admit they really have no melodies in their music ....seemed every song but maybe 1 sounded the same... herring is all about being the loudest on stage and really just plays super loud leads that lack soul, originality or inspiration..just loud so sounds impressive...go on youtube and listen to real guitar gurus who are unknown!.. the hammond carries the band way more than anything else... but that is just my opinion based on what i percieved to hear...anybody agree?... i saw my 1st panic show in 1988...while they have more fans now, the music really hasn't evolved

I have read in more than one post above that Jimmy Herring needed Panic and their songs to evolve in to the guitarist that he is today and that up until now he has not had a solid band to play with. While Panic has put him into a new spotlight it ain't his first rodeo...

-ARU... with the Colnel, Oteil and Apt. 268... they suck right?

-Jazz is Dead... This has to be terrible...

-The Codetalkers... Ahhhh who is Bobby Lee Rodgers anyways?

-Herring, Rodgers and Sipe... 8 bucks to lean on the stage right in front of Jimmy in a small club... awful stuff.

-The Dragonflys... who would want to see Jimmy and Baraco in a small club throwing down

-Phil Lesh and Friends... Just another bass player touring around with sub par musicians... see also Warren Haynes and John Molo

-The Allman Brothers... I am going to tell you this one really sucked with Jimmy playing alongside D. Trucks

-The Dead... enough said.

Panic picked up an all-star and they have made leaps and bounds since the "loss" of George...

cavemandan...after this weekend i can totally see where you are coming from, i have seen panic about 15 times, at fests and their own shows, with mikey, when they had that other dude who i can't remember his name when they came back from that hiatus, and this weekend at all good was the weakest i have ever seen them. now that doesn't mean that i think they suck, they just weren't firing on all cylinders, at some points of the show they were, like ride me high was pretty tight, but i felt like the guitars were uninspiring with a few highlights here and there, the one spacey segue they did was just insane. you know their next show could have been tighter than anything i've ever seen, every band has days that they don't just have the magic that makes them great. it's human nature. however i didn't expect that caliber of a show for the headlining slot on saturday at the fucking best fest on the east coast to have that slot, i was looking forward to it all weekend and then looked over at my friends and said :they need to rock this festival: just a little dissapointing but i still love them.
