2007 Shortlist Nominees

The Long List of nominees for the Sixth Annual Shortlist Music Prize were announced this week. The well-regarded tastemaker started in 2001, and the competition honors albums that have NOT been certified Gold [i.e. sales of 500,000 or more] by the Recording Industry Association of America by the time of nomination. Cat Power picked up the 2006 award for The Greatest, becoming the first woman to win the prize.

This year’s listmakers are Ronnie Vannucci (The Killers), CMJ New Music Report editor-in-chief Rev. Moose, Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol), KCRW DJ Chris Douridas and and Hunnypot Internet Radio. To see who nominated which titles visit the official Shortlist site.

Liberals thank you so much for insight on bands you admit knowing nothing about, pretty credible source.

the lack of jambands on that list is quite disturbing consitering they are the ones making the majority of the groovy music you hear today. Where the hell is Umphreys McGee?!

I, too, would rather listen to Umphrey's and the jambands instead of most, if not all, of these groups. Most of these bands (besides Iron and Wine and a few others) are heavy on style and studio production, which is fine, but not really my bag. Whatever happened to that deep pocket of groovilicious funk? I guess I always enjoyed dancing rather than standing still.

There's a lot of amazing music on here, some of the best Rock music of our time. I find it hard to believe, though, that Neon Bible, Sky Blue Sky, GaGaGaGaGa, and a couple others sold less than 500k copies. Is that a very large number? What kind of albums DID sell that many in '07?
