Scott Amendola said it best. John Zorn put out some amazing albums this year which included Mike Patton, Marc Ribot and the amazing drumming by Joey Baron. Seeing Moonchild would be a dream come true or to just see John Zorn live period in any form.....

New Pornographers, CHALLENGERS - another great collection of tunes to sing along with and infectious melodies that stick (how do they keep them coming? unreal)

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Damo Suzuki, PLEASE HEAT THIS EVENTUALLY - opposite of above, and awesome.

Michael Brecker, PILGRIMAGE - swan song of a jazz great, surrounding himself with talent and recording his final musical ideas

Radiohead, IN RAINBOWS

Gov't Mule Bonnarroo set in June was spectacular (Panic and Sasha/Digweed also fab)

Zappa Plays Zappa Beacon in NYC on Halloween - 3 hours, no break, great music

yeah, marc brownstein is a bigg tool. i love bisco but still hes such a douche. i saw him on an interview saying that you could tell the bisco fans apart from the umphreys fans. the umphreys fans were all wearing polos and preppy (kinda true) and all the bisco fans had their flat billed hats to the side and bobbing their heads like him which isnt true. hes not even that good anymore. but the overall winner of this article is clearly wilco.

1. TEA LEAF GREEN 2/15/07?? 8150 Club (Vail, CO) TLG's first time there and they new it would be their last because it was getting torn down. The legendary bouncy floors were going crazy!

2. STRING CHEESE Dobson Ice Arena (Vail, CO) was hot as hadies but the boys left everything they had there for those two shows.

3. WIDESPREAD PANIC Wakarusa June 9th. My 30th B-day, with my best friends, 80 degrees, BEAUTIFUL sunset, and they opened up with AIN'T LIFE GRAND!

4. ASSEMBLY OF DUST - Saw them about four times last year and I still believe they are one of THE MOST underrated bands on the scene. Reid Genauer is a modern-day lyrical genius and Nate Wilson is THE best keyboardest on the scene. PERIOD.

5. PHIL AND FRIENDS Sept ? Kansas City/Uptown Theater - Jackie Greene really blew me away. Guy's got soul. This lineup as a whole has it locked in.

6. MOE Liberty Hall, Lawrence KS

"i didn't think brownstein was actually THAT self absorbed -- he lists his own band as one of his favorite shows?? and i liked bisco."

so what? is it such a bad thing that an artist happened to have the most fun at one of his own shows? not to mention, you dont even know why he chose it as one of his favorite shows, maybe hes got a reason that goes beyond the music. maybe it is something personal, who knows?

For the record, Brownstein listed the Tractorbeam show, which was an experimental off-shoot of the Biscuits: a 100% instrumental show, no singing. For anyone who has heard it -- traditionally a fan of the Biscuits or a vocals hater -- the show unquestionably ruled. Apparently Marc loved it like the fans did. He is so much like a fan himself in caring about the setlist and the improvisations. It would be neat to hear exactly why he listed that show if Jambase could do an interview with him on this. I think that is great to have confidence & enthusiasm, and to compliment his band-mates like that especially considering they're working with a newer drummer, and they had never played a show like this one before. Listing it 3rd best is humble enough for me, I think he was being honest.

The Tractorbeam show is available here

I am really enjoying all the Comments. I am going to pick up some of these discs that I haven't heard yet, that are recommended here, like Bassnectar.

A lot of good eclectic cross-genre picks, very un-jam band too. Seems like the door has been shut on jam bands as we know them. Good songwriting and real experimental music are back in vogue finally. Phew!

OOOOPS! I hate to leave out

HOT BUTTERD RUM: Live in the Noretheast.....and AMAZING live cd!!! One of my most played of the year.

The Conch by moe. is really awesome too, but I leave it out because of how it peters out at the end of the album. Thats what makes it not reach my top 5, other than that it deserves note IMO.

Uncle Fishbits

Mine is sort of weird. The first are in no particular order

Burial - Untrue

Bassnectar - Underground Communication

Skream - Rinse

Justice - Cross

5) Caribou - Andorra

6) LCD Sound Sytem - Sound of silver

7) Radiohead - in rainbows

8) MIA - Kala

9) Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

10) I am voting dubstep as a genre. Period.

Why dubstep?

The second effort from Skream and Burial are phenomenal... but it isn't indicative of them as artists, so much as a new artform taking shape as a legitimate and interesting method of using electronic music to filter dub dancehall beats. In the end, they are not only groundbreaking albums... It is the artist maturing secondary to the art form.

Untrue wins hands down as most interesting and innovative album of 2007. This is excited and uncharted new territory in the world of music, as well as electronica.

Ryan Adams

Some live experiences from 07 that I can actually remember: Badu calling the culture on our shit during 'the other side of the game'@ harmony Festival in Santa Rosa, CAMPO BRAVO at the REVOLUTION!!! Ivan Neville scorching delivery of CCR's 'Fortunate Sun' on Austin City Limits, The Mother Hips @ GAMH, Mechelle Amador @ Amnesia, the Blue Cranes from Portland @ the Revolution Cafe,Marcus Shelby @ the Revolution Cafe, PHIL LESH ON UPRIGHT BASS AT THE WHARF!!! Phil's band also sounded the best i have heard since the Q @ that show, KAI ECKART PLAYED SOME OF THE GREATEST ELECTRIC BASS I HAVE EVER SEEN @ 12G'S, I dont know exactly who I have been hearing at FULL MELT parties @ Jellys this year but they have the highest standards for electronic dance music of varied flavors&textures that i have found around the Bay. also had a blast on a road trip to see a few LOTUS shows this year highlighted by a sweet version of Herbie Hancock's 'Rocket' @ Great American Music Hall.

Because of so many of y'alls recommendations I bought the spoon album and the iron and wine album that have been mentioned throughout this list so many times - Incredible Stuff! mind blowing even, perfect for my long drive home to NC from DC. Also the new lotus remix album (copy past repeat?) was quite nice after a quick blaze ...This list is awesome. So much cool new music to check out. Thanks everybody.

Not As Good As Last Year:

I read and sampled most of the "favorite lists" published by the musicians and other industry members listed in this article. Quite frankly most were disappointing - certainly not 1/2 as good as last year's recommendations. I think I am going to pass on the "expert" opinions this time around and check out what some of you fans have recommended.

So far so good. Many of which I can easily agree with....

Yeah, Im kinda bummed on the whole "rolling Stone" magazine type of choices for many a jam and music fans, but only because it makes me feel alienated that I dont like a lot of it and others do. I find a lot of it quality music, just not my tastes at all. The new Radiohead is genious, but I cant even stand one note of it. The Iron & Wine album is very nice, and Spoon kinda floats my boat, too.....but other than that Im just a little frusterated that I cant get into most of whats popular. The QUALITY jammy dance rock shred groove & or grass music that IS around is just what makes me most happy. I love all the experimentation with genres that everyone is experiencing: its really OK to love anything these days without feeling in your own personal music closet....there are still trends that dominate, and like I said that can be alienating to some, but all in all its just so fun to hear what all of YOU, jambase and comments posters, have to say as a whole....this is a very diverse community, cheers to that!

Tho i do have to say, that it is a crying freakin shame that this country doesnt hear much of the band the Levellers from Europe. They are celebrating their 20th anniversary and are at their best, NOW....seriously my favorite band of all time, doing their best work now.....Beautiful raging celtic folk rock punk beauty that I am not sure if we will ever experience out here. They even have their own festival and won best festival band in England. There is some top notch things going on out there beyond our Rolling Stone/Relix/americania world.........IMO its an incredible time for music and the past aint got nothing on right now. I'll keep an open mind with the music I dont understand or like yet.

1. Porcupine Tree - Nil Recurring (This is an EP that followed up their album, Fear of a Blank Planet. Both are phenomenal, but the EP is my favorite release of the year.

2. Oceansize - Frames - A brit progressive "post-rock" band that it seems few in America have heard about. This album is full of great grooves, tempo changes, different voicings.

3. Radiohead - In Rainbows w Bonus disk - The bonus disc has my favorite track of the entire release. Make sure you get it too. Great Album.

4. Pearl Jam - Live at the Gorge - This set includes three complete EPIC shows from the 2005 and 2006 tours. Pearl Jam really raised hell on this last tour - like a band reborn. This is a great representation of it.

5. Miles Davis - The Complete On The Corner Sessions. This album is often overlooked in the Mile scatalog, but has been my personal favorite for awhile now. Some of the most psychedelic and ground breaking material he ever released. To have alternate takes, improvs, and outtakes from those sessions is more than I thought I'd ever get.

1. Porcupine Tree, The Orange Peel, Asheville NC - November

2. Umphrey's McGee - 10KLF

3. The Dead Kenny G's (Skerik, Dillon, Houser) - Emerald Lounge, Asheville, NC - November

4. Les Claypool & the Fancy Band, Asheville NC

5. Toubab Krewe - 10KLF

For shows I gotta say that the All Good Late Nights were unbelievable. Lotus>Ratdog>Duo>STS9??! And the moe. set and All-Star Jam were both fantastic. But my show of the year occurred just a few days before the new year. THE JOIN - 12/29 at the Sonar in Baltimore. These guys should win New Groove at the Jammys even though they're from existing bands. Good work all!

1. Wilco- Sky Blue Sky

2. moe.- The Conch

3. The Shins- Wincing the Night Away

4. Arcade Fire- Neon Bible

5. Ghostface Killah- Big Doe Rehab

6. Wu-Tang Clan- 8 Diagrams

1. Gov't Mule w/ Keller Williams-Beacon Theatre NYC; 12.28.07--> Had high expectations for this show and they were blown away. Incredible show.

2. Page McConnell-Gramercy Theatre NYC; 04.03.07--> Ditto. I was also great to see the Chairman again.

3. Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem-Randalls Island NYC; 10.06.07--> I knew Arcade Fire would be great but had no idea LCD Soundsystem would be this entertaining. There set was probably the most fun show I saw in 2007. It also blew me away that so many of the nyc "hipsters" attending this show would leave the Arcade Fire's tour ending set early. I remember thinking to myself that hippies would never do such a thing.

4. GZA/Genius from Wu-Tang Clan 12.13.07--> He performed almost all of his classic Liquid Swords at the Knitting Factory in NYC. Absolutely amazing. So many memorable moments. The crowd finishing his every line for the first 6 or 7 songs. His a cappella tribute to ODB. He and his crew walking through the crowd before coming onstage. Killah Priest slaying the crowd for what seemed like a half hour straight. Good times indeed.

5. The Slip @ Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ--> Nailed most of Eisenhower and Marco Benevento on keys for a tune.

6. moe. @ Highline Ballroom NYC; 05.06.07--> Typically great moe. show. "Kids" in the second set was sick.

7. Wilco @ Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ--> My first time seeing them. I am now a hardcore fan. Yes, they are that good.

1. Led Zeppelin played a show. 2008 Summer Tour?

2. Confirmation that Radiohead will tour in 2008.

3. Mike Gordon stayed home all year to write music so this year we may get to see him play.

4. Langerado at Big Cypress. I predict good things.

It's been on a slow boil for me but Iron and Wine is my favourite album of the last few YEARS not to mind 2007. Didn't love them live but Brilliant album.

Other highlights include Back Door Slam, Feist, and Arcade Fire (especially live).

Top show for me would be Rodrigo y Gabriela in April in NYC. Outstanding talents.

Other shows include My Morning Jacket, Grace Potter, Bela Fleck and DeVotchKa.

Regret? Not catching Daft Punk.
