Last Friday, which was Jerry Garcia’s birthday, Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass provided the first tribute of the day to the Grateful Dead front man at Gathering Of The Vibes in Bridgeport, CT. Grateful Grass features Keller along with bassist Reed Mathis and mandolin wiz Jeff Austin, formerly of Yonder Mountain String Band performing what our Vibes reviewer Stu Kelly described as “classic Grateful Dead numbers with a unique and compelling bluegrass twist.”

The trio’s set included such interesting pairings as “Bird Song” > “The Other One” > “Bird Song” and “Feel Like A Stranger” > “Can’t Come Down” > “Feel Like A Stranger,” which each showed off the immense talents of Mathis, Williams and Austin. A crispy matrix recording of the set has surfaced on Archive.org thanks to taper Ted Gakidis (who also provided the Lotus: Talking heads Deconstructed and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead recordings we’ve posted about).
