Flashback | Jerry Garcia Guests With Traffic In 1994

In 1994 Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi brought Traffic back for their first tour since 1974, which included a number of dates opening for the Grateful Dead. The tour wound up being the last for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame act and was documented in the 2005 concert film The Last Great Traffic Jam.

Two of Traffic’s support sets for the Dead took place on August 3-4, 1994 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Jerry Garcia sat in with Traffic on “Dear Mr. Fantasy” at both shows. Garcia was familiar with the tune as it had been part of the Grateful Dead’s repertoire between 1984 up until keyboardist Brent Mydland’s tragic death in 1990 (Brent handled lead vocals on Dead covers of “Dear Mr. Fantasy”). One of Garcia’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” guest spots was featured in The Last Great Traffic Jam. Take a peek:
