Road warriors Umphrey's
McGee brought their current tour to New Orleans last night, where Mike Dillon came out
to play vibes and percussion on a long-lost cover as part of the band's two-set
performance at The Civic Theatre.
Dillon emerged in the middle of the first set to lend a hand on a cover of Herbie Mann's
"Muscle Shoals Nitty Gritty." Umphrey's had last played the song way back on February 9,
2013 - a gap of 129 shows. The second set started off with a lengthy, well-jammed "Hurt
Bird Bath" and included both of the group's "Nurse" songs - "Night Nurse" and "Day Nurse."
Umphrey's also treated Crescent City fans to the first version of The Cars's "Just What I
Needed" since it was debuted back in February. The sextet brought the show to a close with
a "Divisions" encore that featured a tease of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme."
