The Police
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The singer in The Police jumps like a "petulant pansy," the drummer is making a "complete hash," and who knows what the guitarist is doing?

Notes from a bitter critic? Actually, it's a disarmingly frank concert review from the aforementioned drummer of the newly reunited rock trio.

A philosophical Stewart Copeland unleashed his vitriol in a posting on his Web site on Thursday, a day after the band played its second show in Vancouver, the Canadian city where it began its first world tour in more than 20 years on Monday.

"This is unbelievably lame," Copeland wrote of Wednesday's show at the GM Place arena. "We are the mighty Police and we are totally at sea."

This article means nothing. You have to go to the complete article and read it to make any sense of what the hell is going on. Even then, it really isn't worth reading unless you're extremely bored at work. The basic point is that even the band knows they suck and openly admit it. I'm sure this will make even more people buy overpriced tickets for these lousy shows.

I hardly think someone who's devoted their whole life to music is actually dismissing it. Think Copeland meant, "Well, not a great show but it's just one show," more than "screw music." The news aspect comes in when a) a legendary group reforms and begins playing their first shows in 20 years and b) when was the last time an established musician was this honest about playing badly? I've never heard anyone in a jam band fess up to being REALLY off and I've heard them suck it plenty of times. Honesty is rare and even more so with famous people. I give Stewart points for this. By saying they fell short early in the tour, by publicly demanding better of his bandmates, well, maybe the rest of the tour will be better.

It's really easy to dismiss The Police today but a LOT of bands, including JamBase faves like ALO and Umphrey's, owe a debt to The Police, who pioneered a mixture of pure pop music with high level musicianship and elements of jazz and reggae. From the distance of 20+ years they may not seem that important but as someone who was there when they were a new band I can testify to their greatness. Whether they're that good now remains to be seen. Respect is earned not given but given their history I'm inclined to listen with an open mind.

Copeland has said he'd like to do something really different at Bonnaroo if he can get Summers & Sting to play along. Even if they play it straight, I was surprisingly knocked out by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers last year and maybe The Police have the same potential.

This story is a little misleading the article, he seems to be laughing off a terrible show, not taking pot shots at the band (as the headline kind of implies).

What is left out is more telling - he said that Sting "momentarily" looked like a petulant pansy INSTEAD OF THE GOD OF ROCK, which was notably left out of the "short" version of the article...also important is that after these comments, he and the band "hugged and laughed hysterically."

Doesn't seem like a real "slam" so much as it was him getting a few things off his chest after a poor show.

Bonnaroo really does need to follow Langerado's example and not waste peoples time with a crappy headliner. The tents should be bumpin while The Police are fumbling. The clusterfuck of Sat night needs to be resolved somehow. And Sasha needs to play the 3-6am set like he did at roo last year. Shouldnt interfere with the Galactic/J5 tag team.

Copeland is a douche and doesn't deserve anyone's respect. Yes, he's a talented, established drummer (everyone knows Oysterhead's the shit). However the way he dismisses his own band but yet seems to have no problem with making money off his overpriced concert tickets shows what is really important to him. The purposefully inflammatory things he said about jazz and Coltrane in the Jambase interview he gave were immature and stupid. The Police suck and for the most part have always sucked. All Good is the place to be, not the nostalgia shit Copeland is pushing at Roo - who the fuck wants to relive the Reagan era?

Come on, kids! Copeland is known for his irreverent commentary...just read the Jambase interview from Feb.
Copeland is the man, tho. Being able to be on page with the likes of Trey and Les, playing Roo last year with them while the other Police were doing...doing..what?

I wish that Les and Trey would play Oysterhead with Copeland at Roo this year so that Sting could see just how dated and pretentious he really is when it comes to music.

I'll see The Police at Roo this year, but I'm expecting it to be with zero improv and I know in my heart it is because the others just cannot hang with the likes of the Copeland. Let 'em say what he wants and take it with a smile!

Thanks Stu!

Actually, Copeland's comments are fairly common. Most artists are critical of themselves and their performances. The thing that made this a bigger deal is that he made it public, including about another band member.(So I guess he kinda broke the rules/etiquette) Probably makes the Virgin people/all of the other Police Tour investors cringe!

"What The Police is doing [at] Bonnaroo, I don't know," Copeland said during a recent teleconference. "But I'm looking forward to it because I think it's going to be a completely different Police show from any of the other shows on the tour, because Bonnaroo is a very different kind of gig. We've been rehearsing for four months. The band is so tight you could open a bottle with it."

You have to read the whole article to see that he's poking fun at their own performance. Sting is extremely talented (I don't see where all the sting/claypool comparisons are coming from because they are completely different styles). I'd give the band a couple shows to work out the kinks. Their Bonnaroo performance should be monumental, and it may change a lot of your minds.
