Umphrey's McGee :: 04.06.07 & 04.07.07 :: The Murat :: Indianapolis, IN

Umphrey's McGee by Dave Vann
Umphrey's McGee returned to the Murat Egyptian Room for a two-night run that was taped for their next live album. These nights found six musicians beautifully in sync with their fans, whose enthusiastic chanting will most likely add a humorous backdrop to the stellar musicianship on this future release.

There was a fair amount of blistering solos from guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss ("40s Theme") over the two nights, as well a fine showcase for drummer Kris Myers ("Liquid" > "Jimmy Stewart"). These nights had a special feel to them, and you could see the whole band work together to project one voice. No matter what songs make their way onto the live release, the content will exemplify Umphrey's current style.

The jams on "Hurt Bird Bath," "In The Kitchen" and "Jajunk" highlight the many styles Umphrey's McGee has explored the past few years on their way to creating something new. The middle section of "In The Kitchen" slowly transformed Bayliss and Cinninger's acoustics, intertwining them gracefully with keyboardist Joel Cummins' baby grand. The entire band skillfully navigated through a blissful jam until Myers started driving them back to the verse. Bayliss and Cinninger switched back to electrics, and Cummins' twinkling piano underscored Bayliss' singing with echoing notes. Recently, Umphrey's has been employing this style more often, bringing the verses smoothly out of the jams or starting the verse over the improvised section for a few bars before the instrumental part comes back in.

Jake Cinninger by Chris Monson
"Ringo" > "Hajimemashite" > "Ringo" proved reason enough to look forward to a second listen to these shows. Bayliss' voice was at its finest in this vocally challenging sequence that made for a great, seamless first night set closer. "Hurt Bird Bath" provided one of the best moments of the two nights that can only be described as everything live music is supposed to be. At the pinnacle, Myers entire kit seemed to pulse as everyone else clicked in and pulled the jam together, culminating with Cinninger's solo topping but not overpowering the danceable tune.

Variety is the spice of life for Umphrey's and it makes their improvisational "Jimmy Stewarts" unique every time. The dynamic interplay between Bayliss and Cinninger is always a force to be reckoned with but during "40s Theme" it was the smooth handoff of transitioning solos, Bayliss' flowing style reached a plateau before letting Cinninger sprint to the top.

Before the encore, Umphrey's took a jab at themselves, coming out with a few handwritten signs. "This" "Album" "Sucks" and "Boo." After some crowd chanting and a few laughs, "Mulche's Odyssey" capped the two-night run.

This live album will set a benchmark for Umphrey's McGee. Not necessarily better or worse than anything to date, it's a snapshot of what they're capable of now and a preview of their overwhelming potential tomorrow. Umphrey's McGee are the band to watch, but not because of what they've done but because of what they yet to do.

There is no throne. If Phish were ever to return and play like they did in '94 (this will never happen of course), they would be the best band in the world. Umphrey's can be cool sometimes, but they're jams just don't go anywhere. Phish's jams went all over. They are completely different bands, and I have no idea why I'm comparing them.

why do I always find myself yawining at sts9, different stokes for different folks dude. But seriously why do you come on a particular bands show review to rip on them. why.... as I have said in other posts do you really think someone is going to read your post, particularly a post for show review, which the only people who would read it are those who were at the show or who really like the band, are going to see what you said and say to themselves aww man this Zapzapa yawns at umphrey's I better cancel my new years plans. umph is sooo good and I hope the hajemishite is a really tight version, Does anyone know if they are going to take both nights and condense into one album. If so, I would rather just download both nights in their entirety instead, maybe keep the live album around for peeps I want to introduce to umph.

Love the "There is no throne" comment, Filo.

Sometimes, I feel like people want "My Jamband Can Kick Your Jamband's Ass" bumper stickers or something. It's silly.

As far as the CD goes, I can't imagine they would chop their show up, considering how we all are accustomed to listening to their full shows.

Anyways, I'm waiting down here in SoCal for the boys in mid-June, so be sure y'all take care of them until then.

P.S. Umphreaks, if you get a chance, catch Daft Punk this Summer. They put on an INSANE show.

Why cant we all just listen to music because we like music?... for example, thats why i dont like the people that dog on Bonnaroo and shit just cuz its the popular festival to go to...if all of you guys that i am talkin about only listen to the music that you listen to because you want to be cool, then thats just music is about community and sharing the same enjoyable experience as a fan with the band...haters suck and you just look like a dumbass when you write bullshit about what sucks and whos the beginning to think that music is all about image anymore and not the music...I miss Zappa...where are the real music fans at...

I mean, maybe that was a boring show, I have seen umph shows where like one tune is the highlight and then I have seen shows where I am clutching my head in the whole time. As our red headed friend once said if your gonna take a risk sometimes your gonna play shit. Keep giving um a chance. I keep giving STS9 a shot when they come through my town at the very least and I have not liked them not even one bit. But that doesnt change my point dont go on a show review article to rip on a band or announce that you dont like them.

Umph is a great band and I think what they are doing is great it's just not my cup of mushroom tea. it's not that they suck it's just that STS9 is better.<----- no I'm joking about that, but really i was bored for a good part of the show when i saw them last

thanks Jimmystewart1, i was just wondering if these made it up on the archive. ha! they really shouldnt have let that out to ruin the surprise.

Really hope Ringo > Haj > Ringo is great and makes it on the album. those 2 songs are both always a treat.

I love the "my jamband can kick your jamband's ass" bumper sticker idea. My buddy and I aggree on every band except for umph, who I love and he hates. we just rib each other about it all in good fun, but things do get alot more heated on this site.

Lemme preface this thought with the fact that phish was my favorite band for years and years and I saw 20 shows, but at this point, I dont think um would be deserted if phish came back. (Aside from being sure theyre not, and if they did would prolly never tour extensively like they did) Its not like phish would be near as hot as they were back in the 90's ever again; whereas, um is hotter than a stolen tamale right now. I would like it if um got huge tho just because the sheer size of the scene is definitely something i miss.

pretty cool review
