About Rustic Overtones
Rustic Overtones is a seven-piece band hailing from Portland, ME where they have been pioneers in the New England scene for the past twenty years. Famous for putting on powerhouse live performances, their distinctive blend of rock, soul and funk has earned them unanimous critical acclaim and a legion of loyal supporters. “Dave Gutter is an absolute monster of a front man…Rustic Overtones is a must see live act,” raves the Hartford Courant.
“Seeing people sing my lyrics is like a drug for me,” says Gutter who frequently jumps over barriers into crowds for a face-to-face connection with fans. Moves like this, along with their dynamic horn section and in the pocket grooves have won the band numerous awards including 2013 New England Music Award Best Live Act/New England, 2012 New England Music Award Best Band/Maine, 2012 Portland Phoenix Best Male Vocal, 2010 Portland Phoenix Album of the Year, 2010 Portland Phoenix Best Live Act, 2010 Portland Phoenix Best Male Vocal, 2010 Portland Phoenix Album of the Decade, and 2009 Portland Phoenix Best Live Act.
The band’s discography is a lesson in musical maturity and artistic creativity. From the ska bounce of Rooms by the Hour to the lush string arrangements of The New Way Out, their desire to never repeat themselves has pushed The Overtones to challenge both themselves and their audience. Rustic’s studio ambition has lead to collaborations with David Bowie and Tony Visconti, Imogene Heap, Funk Master Flex, Eric Krasno and Nigel Hall.
Rustic Overtones have traveled a road as rough as the cobblestone streets of their hometown—the highs and lows of being on a major label, line up changes, a four-year hiatus—and yet they remain unscathed, emerging from darker times with a renewed sense of purpose and optimism. Gutter describes their 2012 album Let’s Start a Cult as “unlike our others, in that it’s really about who we are and where we’ve been and the salvation and comfort that music gives us.” The band will build on those themes and extrapolate the cult metaphor on the sequel Let’s Start a Cult Part II, due out in late 2013.
