Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is an example of musical sincerity. Weaving together collective and individual influences without compromise, they are as much themselves as they are a unit—a crucial trait of landmark instrumental ensembles. Steel pannist and founder Jonathan Scales’ compositional skill mixes with tasteful, avant-garde improvisations to form an unmistakably unique approach to an instrument often associated with cruise ships and tropical music. Driftwood Magazine says “Scales is to steel pans ….what Béla Fleck is to the banjo—an über innovator.”
With gut-wrenching grooves and blistering, soulful melodic lines, bassist Cody Wright is becoming known around the world as a true innovator. With tasteful virtuosity, he brings a unique intensity to the band’s performance that has to be witnessed to be completely understood. Bass legend Victor Wooten called Wright’s playing “Amazing and musical!!”
2014/2015 marks the arrival of drummer Chaisaray “Chais” Schenck into the Fourchestra (taking over for Phill Bronson). Breathing new life into the group with inspiring, rock-solid grooves and a great ear, Schenck is already contributing greatly to the band’s creative evolution, pushing Scales and Wright to push even further.
2013’s self-titled collaborative album on Ropeadope Records featured guest collaborators Victor Wooten and Howard Levy (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones) and is fully orchestrated with horns and strings.
In 2014, the Fourchestra released “Mixtape Symphony” (Ropeadope.) A dense, half-hour long-form album inspired by and dedicated to Roy “Futureman” Wooten, the album featured the core trio of Scales, Wright and percussionist Phill Bronson and peaked at #6 on the iTunes Jazz charts.
