Yonder Mountain String Band Welcomes Guests At Red Rocks

On Saturday night the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado hosted an evening of jam-leaning acoustic string band music with a bill featuring sets from Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, Earls of Leicester, The Infamous Stringdusters and Yonder Mountain String Band. The latter two band co-headlined the night with Yonder Mountain closing out the evening in their home state that saw them welcome a number of guests.
The Nederland, Colorado-based band got their portion of the evening going with “Landfall.” The track from their 2015 release Black Sheep segued straight into a take on the Grateful Dead’s “Fire On The Mountain.” YMSB then worked through a selection of their own material with “I’ve Always Been Crazy,” “Chasing My Tail” and “Casualty.” Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” came ahead of “Hey Day,” a new song written by Dave Johnston that was debuted earlier this year. Lap steel guitar master Jerry Douglas emerged next for a set-closing take on “Angel” from the band’s 2006 eponymous release.
In the spirit and tradition of bluegrass music, Yonder Mountain shared the stage with a number of guests during their encore. Douglas returned along with the members of the Infamous String Dusters as the ad-hoc ensemble served up a cover of Todd Synder’s “Sideshow Blues” from the singer-songwriter’s 1996 release Step Right Up. The stage continued to fill up as Horseshoes & Hand Grenades emerged next. The musicians all joined forces on a show-closing version of Buffalo Springfield’s poignant “For What It’s Worth.”
