Yonder Mountain String Band Brings Out Guests At NWSS

Jamgrass outfit Yonder Mountain String Band is currently hosting their annual Northwest String Summit at Horning’s Hideout in North Plains, Oregon. At each of YMSB’s first two performances so far the quintet invited fellow festival performers to join them on stage for a number of rousing sit-ins.
Yonder’s first performance at this year’s NWSS took place Friday night and the band wasted little time before welcoming Paul Hoffman, Mike Devol and Anders Beck of Greensky Bluegrass, as well as The Del McCoury Band’s Ronnie McCoury (who also performed with Keller Williams & The Travelin McCourys) for a run of collaborative songs, beginning with the title track from their recently issued new album Black Sheep. The guests also augmented the first set closing “Kentucky Mandolin” and “White Freightliner.” YMSB’s second set on Friday was guest-free but did included the opening “Only A Northern Song Northern Song” > “Sidewalk Stars” > “Only A Northern Song Northern Song” sandwich as well as the closing “Angel” > “Robots” > “Angel” pairing. A cover of Pink Floyd’s “Goodbye Blue Sky” filled the encore slot to bring their first NWSS 2015 performance to a close.

On Saturday night Yonder wasted no time welcoming outsiders, taking the stage with The Del McCoury Band in tow. The legendary performer and his family helped lead off the show by assisting on “My Walking Shoes” and “Pain In My Heart.” At the conclusion of the first set Yonder brought out members of The Infamous Stringdusters to sit-in on the set closing “Traffic Jam.” Saturday’s second set was again guest-less but included covers of songs by the likes of Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Talking Heads mixed among originals. For the encore YMSB brought out Larry Keel to join the show ending run through of “Winds Of Wyoming”> “Culpepper Woodchuck” > “Winds Of Wyoming.”
