Appearing on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 1979 album, Damn the Torpedoes, “Refugee” was released as a single in January 1980. The song peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is one of Petty’s most popular songs.

Lainey Wilson detailed working with Wynonna on “Refugee.”

“That was one of the coolest experiences of my life,” she said. “My gosh, every time I tried to use that growl in my voice, I was trying to channel my inner Wynonna. Everybody wants an inner Wynonna.”
