Update 5/22 6:30 p.m. PT: After the Chad Smith/Will Ferrell drum off goes down on this evening’s episode of The Tonight Show, The Red Hot Chili Peppers will team with The Roots for a special performance.

Back in February actor Will Ferrell crashed Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith’s Ask Me Anything session on Reddit to accept Smith’s offer to engage in a drum battle. Ferrell gave the caveat that he’d accept if they could raise $300,000 for College For Cancer and that goal was quickly reached after the actor launched a fund-raising effort.  Last night, details of the drum off between the two look-a-likes were announced by Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon will host the drum battle on May 22. The drum off is being held “to settle who’s the better drummer once and for all,” said Fallon. “We’re going to have a drum-off to see who the real Chad Smith is,” the real Chad Smith told Rolling Stone. “I’m all for it. But unless Will’s been practicing or is secretly a crazy, wild drummer, I think it’ll be evident right off the bat who the real Chad Smith is. I’m ready to take him down.”

As for Ferrell, the actor told Rolling Stone “I have not been practicing. There’s no amount of practice that would help me become a good drummer.” Chad Smith let Rolling Stone know that the winner of the drum off will receive a giant golden cowbell. Speaking of cowbells, Smith is well aware of Ferrell’s famous “more cowbell” skills. “I believe they’ll be some cowbell involved, and that’s what worries me. He might try to win everybody over with his whole cowbell thing. I might have to wrestle and tackle him,” Smith revealed to Rolling Stone. In less than a week we’ll finally have our drum off winner.
