Wilco Kicks Off North American Fall Tour 2019 In Toronto

Wilco began the extensive North American leg of their fall tour on Tuesday night at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage. Jeff Tweedy and company played a whopping eight songs from their recently released Ode To Joy LP including a live debut.

The tour marks the group’s first of North America in two years. Wilco took a hiatus that ran from late-2017 until a pair of June 2019 concerts in Knoxville. The band then toured Europe, played their Solid Sound Festival and returned to Europe last month. It’s now North Americans turn for heaping helpings of live Wilco, though to be fair last night’s show was the only gig of the tour in Canada.

Ode To Joy’s “Bright Leaves” served as opener and seven other songs from the LP would be spread nicely across the band’s 23-song main set. The live debut of Ode To Joy track “We Were Lucky” came in the middle of the set and was followed by the LP’s lead single, “Love Is Everywhere (Beware).”

Wilco didn’t just perform new material as they fit in plenty of staples including “Heavy Metal Drummer,” “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” “I’m The Man Who Loves You,” “Reservations” and “War On War” from their iconic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot record, while A Ghost Is Born was represented by “Handshake Drugs,” “Hummingbird” and “The Late Greats.”

The band also gave fans in Toronto a taste of each of their other studio albums outside of The Whole Love with “Box Full Of Letters” off 1995’s A.M., the “Misunderstood” set closer off 1996’s Being There, “How To Fight Loneliness” and “Via Chicago” from 1999’s Summerteeth and 2007’s Sky Blue Sky and 2009’s Wilco (The Album) represented by the Nels Cline showcases “Impossible Germany” and “Bull Black Nova,” respectively. More recent non-Ode To Joy fare was “Random Name Generator” from 2015’s Star Wars and “If I Ever Was A Child” off 2016’s Schmilco. The group said farewell by pairing “California Stars” and “The Late Greats” as the evening’s encore.
