Widespread Panic Welcomes Guests At Panic En La Playa
By Scott Bernstein Jan 27, 2015 • 12:00 pm PST
Panic nodded to the party atmosphere with a “Disco” opener. The first set rolled on with “Second Skin,” a cover of Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West,” “Give,” “Holden Oversoul” and “Climb To Safety.” The Dirty Dozen Brass Band then came out to assist on “Tail Dragger,” “Christmas Katie” and a take on Professor Longhair’s “Go To The Mardi Gras.” The latter hadn’t been performed by Widespread Panic since way back on October 28, 2000.
The group focused on originals in the second set with classics “Space Wrangler,” “Barstools and Dreamers” and “Chilly Water” among the tune performed over the course of nearly two hours. Bloodkin guitarist Eric Carter lent a hand on the jam that emerged out of “Chilly Water” and the nightly “Drumz” section. Carter returned for the “Quarter Tank Of Gasoline” / “Henry Parsons Died” segment that ended the closing stanza, which also featured Danny Hutchens of Bloodkin on guitar and vocals. For the encore, John Bell & Co. welcomed Carter back for a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Hutchens and Carter also lent a hand on the “End Of The Show” finale.
