Widespread Panic Opens Summer Tour 2019 In Mississippi

Widespread Panic kicked off their Summer Tour 2019 with a concert at Brandon Amphitheater in Brandon, Mississippi on Friday night. The show contained a number of nods to blues, soul and funk legends from the southern rockers as well as a tribute to the late great Dr. John.

The band got the run underway with “Little Kin” ahead of Willie Dixon’s “Weak Brain, Narrow Mind” and “Pleas.” The latter led into “Greta,” which keyboardist JoJo Hermann prefaced with a tease of Dr. John’s “Such A Night.” “Greta” segued into “Cotton Was King,” which contained a “Stop-Go” tease. The first set continued with “Time Zones,” Pops Staples’ “Hope In A Hopeless World,” Robert Johnson’s “Me And The Devil Blues” and closed with “Makes Sense To Me.”

The second set opened with a cover of The Meters’ “It Ain’t No Use”, followed by a continuous block of “Papa’s Home,” “Old Neighborhood,” “1 x 1” and the Jerry Joseph penned “Climb To Safety.” Panic jumped right into another unbroken section beginning with “Diner” followed by a tease of Blind Faith’s “Do What You Like” before returning to Robert Johnson with “Stop Breaking Down Blues.” The second set came to a close with “Holden Oversoul.”

Widespread Panic emerged for the encore with crew member Steve Lopez in tow, who joined jumped on percussion for a cover of the Jerry Joseph number “Chainsaw City” to close out the show. Check out a fan-shot clip of JoJo Hermann’s tribute to Dr. John captured by tacoswidespreadpizza below:
