Widespread Panic Play A Black Sabbath Song For Fifth Show In A Row: Full Show Audio

Back in September Widespread Panic began their Fall Tour by playing six shows with no repeats. The band has started a new trend for the October leg as it’s now been five consecutive performances featuring a Black Sabbath song in the encore including last night’s visit to Stephens Auditorium in Ames, Iowa. Is this foreshadowing what lies ahead over Halloween weekend in Broomfield, Colorado? We’ll soon find out.

Widespread Panic kicked off Wednesday night’s show with a pair of instrumentals: “A Of D” and “B Of D.” The only other times “B Of D” followed “A Of D” were on April 8, 1989 and November 9, 2007 as per PanicStream. John Bell then stepped to the mic to deliver the first “Glory” of October. The first set was also highlighted by a “Airplane” > “Aunt Avis” sequence and a cover of The Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature.”

The Georgia rockers came out for the second set with “Walkin’ (For Your Love)” and continued on with classics “Weight Of The World,” “Pleas,” and “Big Wooly Mammoth.” It was “Proving Ground” that led into the evening’s “Drums” segment, which was followed by a cover of “Honky Red” and Vic Chesnutt’s “Protein Drink”/”Sewing Machine” suite. Panic had a pair of covers in store for the encore as “Let’s Get The Show On The Road” (Michael Stanley) gave way to the band’s debut version of “Warning.” Though Black Sabbath famously recorded “Warning” for their self-titled debut album in 1970, it’s actually a The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation cover.

Next up for WSP is three nights at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield starting Friday.
