Widespread Panic Goes Acoustic At The Ryman

By Andy Kahn Dec 30, 2016 8:16 am PST

Widespread Panic began their New Year’s Run of concerts with an acoustic evening in Nashville at the historic Ryman Auditorium Thursday night. The seated, two set performance was a benefit for the band’s Tunes For Tots charity organization.

An acoustic cover of Talking Heads’ “City Of Dreams” held down the first set opener slot at The Ryman. The rest of the set saw Panic work in such staples as “The Take Out,” Billy Joe Shaver’s “Chunk Of Coal,” “Gradle,” “Walkin’ (For Your Love)” and a cover of The Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight” / “New Mother Nature” that closed the first half.

More of Panic’s classic repertoire was on display in set two, including the opening rendition of “C. Brown.” Acoustic versions of Neil Young’s “Don’t Be Denied” and Cat Stevens’ “Trouble” were played alongside originals such as “Pickin’ Up The Pieces,” “Jack” and the set closer “Ain’t Life Grand.” Set two also featured a solo arrangement of “Imitation Leather Shoes” delivered by keyboardist JoJo Hermann. A bust out of Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross” – last performed by WSP exactly one year ago – opened the encore and was followed by a cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” which drew the special night in Nashville to an end.

Tonight Widespread Panic begins a two-show stand at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Watch audience-shot video highlights of WSP’s Tunes For Tots show below:
