Widespread Panic Dusts Off ‘Smokestack Lightning’ In Dayton
By Scott Bernstein May 2, 2016 • 7:21 am PDT
Last night, Widespread Panic brought Spring Tour to the Dayton area for a performance at Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, Ohio. The band pulled from every era of their career over the course of two sets and an “End Of The Show” encore on Sunday night.
The evening came to a climax after “Drums” and “Drums & Bass,” when Widespread Panic ended the second set with a scorching rendition of “Saint Ex” that segued into “Smokestack Lightning” ahead of a set-closing cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth.” Widespread Panic debuted their take on Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning” in 1986 and have played it a few times a year in recent years. Last night’s version of the blues classic was Panic’s first since July 10, 2015.
