Widespread Panic Covers The Doors & Black Sabbath At Colorado Run Opener

On Friday night Widespread Panic played the first of three shows at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado that will bring this year’s Fall Tour to a close. Each of the initial five concerts of WSP’s October run featured Black Sabbath covers as part of the encore and that trend continued on Friday, yet that wasn’t the only treat in store for fans.

Panic has been covering James Taylor’s “Knocking ‘Round The Zoo” since their early days, but it had disappeared for over two years. Last night the band brought back “K’RTZ” to open the show in Broomfield, their first performance of the song since June 5, 2014. The rest of the opening stanza featured one classic after another including “C. Brown,” “Action Man” and a version of “Papa’s Home” that contained “Fixin’ To Die” within.

The second set picked up where the first set left off as once again WSP focused on older material. Panic kicked off the closing stanza with a “The Take Out” > “Space Wrangler ” > “You Got Yours” sequence. Later in the set the Georgia rockers played the beginning of a “Driving Song” they never finished. “Driving Song” gave way to “Breathing Slow,” which in turn led into the evening’s “Drums” section and a smoking pairing of JJ Cale’s “Ride Me High” followed by “Pilgrims” and “Porch Song.” Friday’s encore began with a cover debut of The Doors’ “The Changeling” and ended with Black Sabbath’s “Black Sabbath” sung by bassist Dave Schools. Widespread Panic hadn’t performed “Black Sabbath” since Halloween ’92, a span of 2,105 shows. The band returns to 1st Bank Center tonight.
