While Widespread Panic was birthed in Athens, Georgia the band has always had a love affair with Colorado. It was in the Centennial State that the group first grew and developed a devoted fan base outside the South and Colorado has hosted many memorable WSP shows over the year. In 1991 they made their Red Rocks debut at the famed Morrison, Colorado venue. Red Rocks quickly became a regular stop each summer with fans coming out in droves. Saturday night marked Widespread Panic’s 50th consecutive sellout at the 75-year-old venue setting a record that will be hard for any band to top.

For the second night in a row the Georgia rockers focused on old school material as just two songs debuted in the past five years made the cut. Panic opened with a “Holden Oversoul” > “Solid Rock” pairing and continued on with the instrumental “B Of D” and one of the aforementioned recent songs, “Angels Don’t Sing The Blues.” While “Jack” gave fans and band alike a breather, “Thought Sausage” picked the energy right back up and a triumvirate of “Bust It Big” > “Impossible” > “Bowlegged Women” provided a strong end to the first set.

The second set started with tour debuts of “Pleas” and “Saint Ex” with the latter containing an inventive inverted intro. Classics “Henry Parsons Died” and “Pilgrims” led into the start of an insane “Driving Song”/”Chilly Water” sequence featuring “Papa’s Home,” “Cease Fire” and “Arleen” within. “Arleen” saw WSP aided by tour manager Steve Lopez on percussion. Widespread Panic ended the memorable night with a triple encore of “Dream Song” (the first at Red Rocks since 1997), Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold” (just the fourth ever) and “North.”
