Twenty three years ago today Widespread Panic brought a three-show run at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California to a close with the help of a rock legend. Bay Area resident Carlos Santana sat-in with the Georgia rockers for the first half of their second set on October 14, 2001.

Santana emerged for his first and only guest appearance with Widespread Panic at the beginning of the second set. Carlos dueled with Michael Houser on the Widespread Panic original “Casa Del Grillo,” Robert Johnson’s “Me And The Devil Blues” and Funkadelic classics “Maggot Brain” and “Red Hot Mama.” While Carlos Santana is best known for his guitar skills, he showed off his drum work on the evening’s “Drums” segment before leaving WSP to finish the set.
