Widespread Panic Busts Out Doors & Black Sabbath Covers In Broomfield

On Saturday night Widespread Panic played the second of three shows at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado that will bring Fall Tour to a close. Panic worked a Black Sabbath cover into their encore for the seventh show in a row, but had a handful of other surprises in store as well.

The six-piece kicked off the festivities with “Coconut,” which marked the first time the early classic opened a show since way back on April 15, 2007. Old favorites “Holden Oversoul” and “Sleepy Monkey” came next ahead of the first “Dirty Business” since October 25, 2015. The set rolled on with a cover of David Bromberg’s “Sharon” and four songs from the band’s most recent LP, Street Dogs, namely “Sell Sell,” “Cease Fire,” “Jamais Vu” and “Tail Dragger.”

A “Surprise Valley” > “Tie Your Shoes” > “Surprise Valley” sequence began the second set. Eventually “Blackout Blues” turned up ahead of a cover of Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.” The band then lit into a “Chainsaw City” featuring Jennifer Kreps on shakere. Panic then took it down a notch with “Mercy” before closing the second set with “Hatfield” and “Love Tractor” after “Drums.” The band shocked and awed when they started their encore with a cover of “L.A. Woman” by The Doors. WSP hadn’t performed the cover since Halloween ’97, a span of 1,462 shows. They weren’t done yet as the trend of Black Sabbath covers in the encore continued with the return of “Iron Man” after a 309 show layoff. Widespread Panic concludes Fall Tour and the 1st Bank Center run with their traditional Halloween show filled with covers tonight.
