When 12-year-old drummer Nandi Bushell got her first drum kit seven years ago, her father showed her the video of The White Stripes’ anthem “Seven Nation Army.” Instantly impressed, Bushell credited The White Stripes drummer Meg White with being a “role model” and her “hero.”
Meg White was recently the subject of a misguided – and since deleted – tweet sent by journalist Lachlan Markay that wrongly criticized The White Stripes drummer’s skills behind the kit. In response to facing a wave of backlash, including a post from The White Stripes guitarist Jack White, Markay apologized for his “petty, obnoxious, [and] just plain wrong” assessment of Meg White’s drumming with the band.
Along with Jack White, others such as The Roots drummer Questlove, also came out in support of Meg White, which now includes Bushell who posted on Twitter a series of tweets detailing her appreciation for Meg and The White Stripes. Bushell concluded her message accompanying the video of her performing “Seven Nation Army” by writing:
Meg and Jack wrote some of the best songs in rock history. They moved me at 5 years old to want to play the drums and still move me today! My screams are for you Meg! You are and always will be my role model and hero!
Bushell’s video ends with a clip from her first time playing drums as her father performed “Seven Nation Army” on acoustic guitar. Watch Bushell’s inspired performance and charming home-video footage of “Seven Nation Army” below:
The Whites Stripes are currently nominated for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. 2023 inductees will be announced in May. This is the first time The White Stripes have been nominated for the Rock Hall.
