The 2017 edition of the Wheels Of Soul Summer Tour drew to a close this week with a final night of performances by Tedeschi Trucks Band, Hot Tuna and The Wood Brothers. This year’s Wheels Of Soul once again produced several collaborations between the trio of acts and Sunday Cinema today rounds up many of the sit-ins that went down during the tour.
The run of shows saw guitarists Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks fronting a TTB lineup that featured keyboardist Carey Frank filling in for multi-instrumentalist Kofi Burbridge as he recovered from heart surgery. Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady sat-in with Tedeschi Trucks Band on a number of occasions. Hot Tuna and TTB collaborations included renditions of Charles Segar’s “Key To The Highway,” Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying,” Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out of My Life, Woman” and Jorma and Jack performing their Jefferson Airplane original “3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds.” Watch audience-shot footage of members of Hot Tuna joining Tedeschi Trucks Band on the Wheels Of Soul Tour below:
Various members of The Wood Brothers – Oliver Wood, Chris Wood and Jano Rix – were also regularly welcomed to the stage by Tedeschi Trucks Band. Among The Wood Brothers sit-ins that happened on the Wheels Of Soul Tour this summer included takes on Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere,” the often paired “Leaving Trunk” (by Sleepy John Estes) > “Volunteered Slavery” (by Rahsaan Roland Kirk), The Rolling Stones’ “Sweet Virginia,” Sean Costello’s “Have You No Shame” with guitarist Tinsley Ellis, Paul McCartney’s “Let Me Roll It” and Elmore James’ “Done Somebody Wrong.” Watch audience-shot video of The Wood Brothers and TTB collaborating below:
The two Wheels Of Soul Summer Tour shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre featured a special guest each night.
