The second annual installment of the Blue Ox Music Festival began on Thursday at Whispering Pines Campground in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Day One of this year’s Blue Ox saw performances from Leftover Salmon, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, The Big Wu and The Cactus Blossoms in the main area as well as a Thursday Saloon featuring The Last Revel and Sloppy Joe.
Leftover Salmon’s set was highlighted by the impressive contributions of new keyboardist Erik Deutsch who adds a jazz sensibility to the band’s jamgrass sound. At one point Deutsch was left on stage with just LoS’s bassist and drummer for a trio jam. Wisconsin’s own Horseshoes & Hand Grenades were celebrating guitarist/vocalist Adam Greuel’s birthday with “Happy Birthday” sing-a-longs between every song the band played. The Last Revel overcame technical difficulties with grace, practically going into the crowd when cables and direct inputs started to die. Blue Ox continues today with performances from Greensky Bluegrass, Sam Bush, The Wood Brothers, hosts Pert Near Sandstone and more. Photographer Michael Kaiz captured Thursday’s action:
