Ween & The Shit Creek Boys Focus On ’12 Golden Country Greats’ In Nashville
Ween kicked off a special run of two shows in celebration of their 1996 studio album 12 Golden Country Greats on Tuesday night at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The five-piece band was joined by the The Shit Creek Boys, a collection of veteran Nashville musicians. Guitarist Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo called the evening “one of my favorite Ween gigs of all time” in a post on a Ween fan page on Facebook and added, “It felt like (for me personally) like vindication for every second I ever dedicated to a life in music. And you the Ween peeps are the difference, the gas in our tank. Thank you.”
The Shit Creek Boys for the run consists of pianist Bobby Ogdin, fiddler Hank Singer, guitarist Danny Parks and pedal steel wiz Russ Hicks. Ween and their guests opened last night’s show with “Japanese Cowboy,” one of nine songs from 12 Golden Country Greats to make the setlist in Nashville. “I’m Holding You” was the only track from the LP that they didn’t perform. Tuesday’s rendition of “Japanese Cowboy” ended with a portion of “Chariots Of Fire” by Vangelis. Ween hadn’t covered “Chariots Of Fire” since October 28, 1996. The other big bust out of the evening was “Pretty Girl” off 12 Golden Country Greats, which also was last played on October 28, 1996.
Ween fit three songs a piece from White Pepper, The Mollusk and Chocolate & Cheese into their 25-tune performance at The Ryman last night. The band also threw in a tease of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound Of Silence” and dedicated “Stay Forever” to Stu Basore. Basore was an award-winning pedal steel guitarist who performed as part of The Shit Creek Boys at past shows in Nashville and during a 1996 tour in support of 12 Golden Country Greats. Stu passed away earlier this year from Lewy Body Dementia. Ween concluded Tuesday’s show with “Fluffy,” the final track off 12 Golden Country Greats as they inserted tunes from the LP throughout the evening.
