Ween concluded the Boston leg of their Halloween run at Roadrunner on Saturday. The band gave the 12 Golden Country Greats cut “Power Blue” a spin for the first time in three years as part of the show.
Ween — guitarists Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, drummer Claude Coleman Jr. and keyboardist Glenn McClelland — got the concert underway with “Don’t Shit Where You Eat.” Favorites like “Bananas and Blow,” “With My Own Bare Hands,” “Roses Are Free,” “Mister Would You Please Help My Pony?” and “Transdermal Celebration” followed before the band dusted off “Powder Blue.”
Ween last played the Nashville-recorded 12 Golden Country Greats tune nearly three years ago to the day on Halloween 2019 in Denver, as per Brownbase. The Boston 2022 play marked the 43rd rendition of the song since its debut on March 3, 1993 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The latest version saw Gener leading the the group through the song sans guitar ahead of a twangy ride from Deaner and a tasty piano solo from McClelland. Watch Ween bust out “Powder Blue” below:
“Gabrielle” followed “Powder Blue” ahead of “I’ll Be Your Johnny On The Spot” and the staple “Voodoo Lady.” The second half of the set also saw the band returning to 12 Golden Country Greats with “Help Me Scrape the Mucus Off My Brain” followed by “Big Jilm” and “The Argus.” After “Puerto Rican Power,” three songs with play counts around 50, “Beacon Light, “Up on the Hill” and “Boy’s Club,” followed.
The latter half of the set also contained favorites like “Zoloft,” and “Ocean Man” along with the band’s cover of Instant Death’s “The Enabler.” A false start and restart on “Don’t Laugh” (I Love You)” came next. Following “She Wanted To Leave,” Ween wrapped the main set with “The Mollusk.” The band returned to encore with “Did You See Me?” and “Buenas Tardes Amigo.”
