Ween Goes Acoustic & Busts Out ELP Cover In Nebraska
By Jeffrey Greenblatt Sep 2, 2017 • 6:45 am PDT
Ween continued a short Labor Day weekend run last night with a stop at the Pinewood Bowl Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska. The New Hope, Pennsylvania rockers treated the crowd in the Cornhusker State to a mix some of their most well-known material, alongside some deeper cuts and a big time bust out for their encore.
The five-piece band opened the night with “Did You See Me?,” from their 2005 collection of outtakes, rarities and demos Shinola, Vol. 1. Three songs later the band offered up just the fifth ever take of “Among His Tribe,” from 2003’s Quebec. From there guitarists Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo and Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, drummer Claude Coleman Jr. and keyboardist Glenn McClelland stuck to some heavy-rotation songs with takes on “The Stallion Pt 3,” “The Mollusk,” and “Ocean Man.”
Midway through their 24-song main set the Dean and Gene strapped on acoustic guitars for a six song stretch that kicked off with “Chocolate Town” and included “Tried and True,” “What Deaner Was Talkin’ About,” “Kim Smoltz” and longtime fan-favorite “Piss Up A Rope.” The rest of the band’s set included a handful of deeper catalog cuts with takes on “Japanese Cowboy,” from their 1996 release 12 Golden Country Greats, “Drifter In The Dark,” from 1994’s Chocolate and Cheese, “She Fucks Me,” from 1991’s The Pod and a pair of tunes from 1997’s The Mollusk – “Pink Eye (On My Leg),” “I’m Dancing in the Show Tonight” – all of which have been played less than 100 times.
Ween saved their biggest surprise for the end of the night as they dusted off their cover of Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s “Lucky Man.” It was the band’s fourth ever take on track from ELP’s 1970 self-titled debut album, and their first attempt at it since 2011.
Ween return to the stage tomorrow with an appearance at the North Coast Music Festival in Chicago.
