Ween Dusts Off ‘Light Me Up’ In San Francisco

New Hope rockers Ween returned to the road on Wednesday night to kick off a series of three shows in California. Guitarist Dean Ween unveiled a custom Alembic guitar complete with an inlay of Ween’s iconic Boognish logo in the middle of the fretboard. The 29-song concert at The Masonic in San Francisco featured a few surprises including the comeback of a long-lost gem.
The five-piece opened with “Nan” and then ran through a batch of staples that included “Transdermal Celebration,” “Mister Richard Smoker” and “Buckingham Green.” In 2007 Ween issued an EP titled The Friends EP which included “Light Me Up.” The band had debuted the song in the live setting in 2005 and it was played a number of times through April 14, 2011. When Ween returned last year following a lengthy breakup “Light Me Up” was nowhere to be found. On Wednesday, the quintet finally resurrected “Light Me Up.”
Deaner showed off his new axe on “A Tear For Eddie” ahead of “Happy Colored Marbles” and a run of “The HIV Song” and “Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down).” The evening’s other big surprise was the return of “Transitions.” While Ween played the deep cut for the first time during their comeback run in Colorado in February of 2016, Wednesday’s version was its 2017 debut. The main set was followed by a three-song encore of instrumental “Fiesta,” The Mollusk’s “I’ll Be Your Johnny On The Spot” and early classic “Fat Lenny.”
Ween concludes a two-night stand at The Masonic on Thursday night.
