Ween Busts Out ‘If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All)’ At Red Rocks Finale
Ween played the second of two consecutive shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on Wednesday night to bring their first run of the year to a close. The band had a big treat in store to end their 23-song main set, as they dusted off a Quebec classic they hadn’t been performed since 2003.
Lightning in the area led to a delayed start for last night’s concert. When the band finally took the stage they opened with “The HIV Song,” one of four tunes from 1994’s Chocolate & Cheese played on Wednesday at Red Rocks. Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman then led the group on “Bananas & Blow” ahead of “The Golden Eel” and a particularly slow and throbbing “Happy Colored Marbles.” From there, Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo had a turn in the spotlight for the year’s first “Sorry Charlie.”
While the quintet focused on their own material over the course of the evening, they did look to bassist Dave Dreiwitz’s time in Instant Death for “The Enabler.” Overall, the set had a nice mix of staples and songs that have been revived in the past few years. The latter category includes “Seconds,” which was played for the first time in 309 shows exactly one year prior. “Ooh Va La” also continues to see plenty of action since Ween brought it back at their hiatus-busting show on February 12, 2016.
As mentioned, the biggest surprise came at the end of the main set with the return of “If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All).” Ween played the Quebec gem 20 times in 2002 and 2003 but it had gone missing since December 9, 2003. Deaner took a seat on a road case throughout the performance of “If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All).” The band went on to end the evening with an encore of “I’m Dancing In The Show Tonight” and “Drifter In The Dark.”
Ween next returns to the stage in Cleveland, Ohio on July 24.
