Earlier this summer we reported on a beautiful cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Brokedown Palace” that Watkins Family Hour recorded for their recently released, self-titled debut album. The all-star ensemble has taken to performing “Brokedown Palace” at their live shows and finds Fiona Apple leading an emotional final verse.
If you’re unfamiliar with Watkins Family Hour, the group grew out of monthly jam sessions held at Largo in Los Angeles beginning in 2002 for musicians who happened to be off the road from their regular gigs. Led by Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins, Watkins Family Hour grew into a more formal project recently with the release of the cover-filled studio album and accompanying tour.
On August 1 Watkins Family Hour featuring the Watkins, Apple, keyboardist Benmont Tench of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and others played City Winery in Nashville, where they delivered a powerful “Brokedown Palace.”
