Beck Says Farewell To Longtime Contributor With Wild ‘Where It’s At’

By Scott Bernstein May 5, 2016 2:19 pm PDT

For over 20 years, bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen has been a crucial member of Beck‘s band. Meldal-Johnsen is an extremely versatile performer who is right there with Mr. Hansen no matter what musical direction Beck takes. Justin is also an accomplished producer and has departed Beck’s band to focus on his production work. The bassist’s last gig with Beck took place on Sunday at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, where he was honored as part of a wild encore.

Beck and his band played a 16-song main set at the festival before returning to honor Prince with a cover of “Raspberry Beret.” However, that was just the beginning as the group then started a “Where It’s At” that wouldn’t end until 15 minutes later. The group worked in teases of the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever,” Prince’s “1999” and “Erotic City,” The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You” and “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugar Hill Gang by the time “Where It’s At” was over. A dramatic moment came during Beck’s band introductions, when Hansen recognized Meldal-Johnsen’s contributions to his music noting that the pair had shared the stage over 1,000 times. Watch fan-shot footage of “Where It’s At” and “Raspberry Beret” captured by runme69 as well as a note penned by the bassist:
