Guitarist Warren Haynes returned to Suneagles Golf Club in Eatontown, New Jersey on Wednesday for his second of two concerts at the venue to open a brief solo tour of the Northeast. The Gov’t Mule guitarist loaded the setlist with covers from classic rock legends last night.
Warren kicked off the evening’s first of two sets with “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground,” a Blind Willie Johnson song Gov’t Mule recorded for their 2017 studio album, Revolution Come…Revolution Go. Haynes then paired his own “I’ll Be The One” with blues standard “It Hurts Me Too” and Van Morrison’s “Cyprus Avenue.” The guitarist went on to debut a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Tunnel Of Love gem “One Step Up.” Haynes honored the home state hero for the second night in a row following a performance of “Big Muddy” at Tuesday's tour opener.
The opening frame continued with a beautiful rendition of George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” before Warren dug in on solo classics “Hattiesburg Hustle” from 2011’s Man In Motion and “Glory Road” off 2015’s Ashes & Dust. The Asheville native capped the set with “Roller Derby Queen” by Jim Croce and “I Shall Return” from Gov’t Mule’s Dose LP.

Haynes treated fans to his beloved cover of U2’s “One” to begin last night’s second set. Next up was the Eric Clapton-popularized blues standard “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out.” It was then back to Man In Motion for “A Friend To You.” Haynes’ own “If Heartaches Were Nickels” was followed by the guitarist’s second ever take on John Prine’s “Hello In There.” From there, Warren fit Reverend Gary Davis’ “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” within “Fallen Down” and ended the frame with “Railroad Boy.”
The guitarist came back to pair Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Southern Accents” with The Allman Brothers Band classic “Melissa” as the evening’s encore. Haynes continues the tour tonight at Charles R. Wood Park in Lake George, New York.
