From 6:45 p.m. until 3 a.m. last night, Asheville’s US Cellular Center hosted the 27th annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, a sold-out concert which benefits the local chapter of Habitat For Humanity. The show featured performances from Love Canon, Hot Tuna, Bruce Hornsby, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Dawes, Blackberry Smoke, The Doobie Brothers and Warren Haynes and the Ashes & Dust Band.
The evening started with Love Canon presenting a set of ’80s classics performed bluegrass style. Love Canon served as the changeover band and played a few more times during the evening and were joined by Bruce Hornsby on his own “The Way It Is” at one point. Following Love Canon’s opening set, Haynes took the stage by himself for his gorgeous cover of George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth).” Hot Tuna’s set saw Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady aided by drummer Justin Guip for an electric performance that included “Been So Long.” Hornsby, who focused on his dulcimer playing, brought a few members of The Noisemakers for his short Xmas Jam set that started with reprises of “Centerfold” and “Sledgehammer” which Love Canon had played earlier. Bruce brought his set to a close with a rousing “Valley Road.”
The Tedeschi Trucks Band set included a mix of originals with a few choice covers. Warren reunited with his old Allman Brothers Band mate Derek Trucks and the TTB for “Keep On Growing” shortly before the group brought the set to a close by covering The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Dawes’ set contained material from All Your Favorite Bands along with other originals and a cover of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” Blackberry Smoke’s set also featured a guest spot from Haynes, who additionally added to The Doobie Brothers’ “Don’t Start Me Talkin'” and “Long Train Running.” Warren ended the night by rounding up his Ashes & Dust Band of ChessBoxer and drummer Jeff Sipe for a set that included plenty of covers and a handful of originals. Mike Barnes helped out on “Skin It Back,” Duane Betts added to a rendition of his father’s “Blue Sky” and Marcus King, Craig Sorrells and Barnes lent a hand on the “Two Of A Kind Blues” show closer.
Stay tuned for much more on this year’s Christmas Jam in the coming days.
