On Friday, guitarist Warren Haynes, keyboardist John Medeski, bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Joe Russo came together for one night only at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The concert — which also featured special guest saxophonist Skerik — was a benefit organized by Debra of America executive director Brett Kopelan. Debra helps fight Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare painful genetic disease.
The quartet, with occasional help from Skerik, played an improvisation-heavy pair of sets at The Cap. The one-night-only ensemble opened their evening with a freeform jam that eventually led them into Junior Walker & the Allstars’ “Road Runner.” Over the course of the two set show, the ad-hoc ensemble would deliver a diverse set of covers. The opening frame featured takes Allen Toussaint’s “Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues)” and Etta James’ classic “I’d Rather Go Blind.” While the second set of the night saw them dig in on the likes of Bob Dylan’s “Tough Mama,” Little Feat’s “Sailin’ Shoes” and “Walk On Guilded Splinters” from Dr. John. The four-piece also worked in takes on Gov’t Mule’s “Rocking Horse” and Haynes’ signature tune “Soulshine.” Photographer Adam McCullough was on hand to capture the action.
