This past weekend’s Newport Folk Festival at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island was filled with surprise appearances from musicians such as David Crosby, John Prine and Mumford & Sons. Sunday kept the trend going with Warren Haynes stopping by to sit-in with guitarist Nels Cline.

Cline’s “Curtis Rogers Memorial Resonator Experience” saw the Wilco guitarist utilize a 1937 National Duolian guitar previously owned by Tennessee-based musician Curtis Rogers. Nels was joined by multi-instrumentalist Brandon Seabrook on banjo, guitar and mandolin for the bulk of the set. Warren Haynes, who had finished a run of Gov’t Mule shows one night earlier, made a surprise appearance for three songs during Cline’s performance.

Nels and Warren first paired up for “I Feel Like Going Home” by Muddy Waters. The duo then performed “The Last Thing On My Mind” by Tom Paxton as per the Providence Journal. Cline went on to sing lead on a version of Wilco’s “What Light” featuring both Warren Haynes and Brandon Seabrook.
