Frontman Warren Haynes recently wrapped a European Tour with his band Gov’t Mule. While overseas the former The Allman Brothers Band guitarist spoke to Music News and among the topics the interview covered was a final ABB album that never was.

Haynes chatted with Barry Warren while Mule was in London last month. The wide-ranging discussion touched upon Haynes’ reaction to the passing of his band mate, bassist Allen Woody, with the guitarist revealing he was first contacted by Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh following Woody’s 2000 death. Haynes also was asked if he thought The Allman Brothers should have recorded another studio album. Though the band never issued a follow-up to 2003’s Hittin’ The Note, Haynes revealed there was some effort made to record a new album, stating:

Yeah, Derek Trucks and I talked about that [recording a new album]. We were thinking of the two of us producing a final Allman Brothers record. I had a few songs that I had written. There were a few cover songs. We were about halfway toward a record maybe, but we could never garner the energy, that morale, from each person. You know one day one person would be into it, but another one not. And then a week later, somebody else would be into it and somebody else not into it. Butch Trucks didn’t particularly want to make another Allman Brothers record and I understood his reasoning behind it, but I thought we should have. I thought Hittin’ The Note was a great record and that we had one more great record that we should have made.

The interview saw Haynes name some of the guitarists he hopes to get to share the stage with, including Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page and Neil Young. The chat goes into other topics such as Gov’t Mule’s longevity, performing for President Barack Obama (but not President Donald Trump), remembering lyrics, up-and-coming musicians and more.
