On May 5, Melvin Seals & JGB will be among those celebrating the 96th anniversary of The Warfield, a legendary San Francisco venue. The Warfield will host Melvin Seals & JGB recreating a show that took place 30 years earlier at the theater as well as a set in honor of Jerry Garcia featuring Melvin, bassist Oteil Burbridge, guitarist Stanley Jordan and saxphonist Dave Ellis.
The Warfield Theater opened in May of 1922 and originally hosted vaudeville performances as well as films and musicals. In 1979 impresario Bill Graham purchased the venue and The Warfield has hosted a who’s who of rock acts ever since. Jerry Garcia is thought to have performed at The Warfield at least 100 times including the Grateful Dead’s famed 1980, 15-show acoustic/electric run at the venue.
Organist Melvin Seals joined the Jerry Garcia Band in 1980 and backed Jerry at The Warfield many times. The JGB started regular runs at the venue in 1988 and it quickly became the Bay Area home for the group. Melvin and his group will recreate a Jerry Garcia Band concert that took place in 1988, but Seals is not planning on revealing just which show they are planning to play. The B3 wizard also thought up the opening set featuring Oteil, Stanley and Dave and hints the lineup may grow. Melvin Seals & JGB will do a full two sets after the opening performance.
Tickets for The Warfield’s 96th Anniversary Celebration featuring Melvin Seals & JGB, Oteil Burbridge, Stanley Jordan and Dave Ellis go on sale Friday, February 16 at 10 a.m. PT.
