Voodoo Music Experience :: 10.26 – 10.28 :: City Park :: New Orleans, LA
New Orleans Bingo Show :: By Zack Smith |
New Orleans and Halloween go together like
boudin and
maque choux. One would even venture to say that the spirit of Halloween lives in the Big Easy year round with local weirdos and pranksters finding countless reasons to dress up in costume and have a good time all the time. In its 9th year, the
Voodoo Music Experience was the epicenter of activity in New Orleans this Halloween weekend. Taking place in the beautiful City Park, festival-goers could enjoy plenty of local flava on the
WWOZ stage –
Trombone Shorty,
Dr. John, and
Deacon John among others – and at the
New Orleans Bingo! Parlour where the freak flags were flying high. You might have come to Voodoo to see resident superstars
Quintron & Miss Pussycat, while just on the other side of the grounds,
The Black Crowes were
soul singin’ and
Common was breakin’ hearts. Voodoo Fest infused the city with an impressive amount of rock featuring
Rage Against the Machine and
Smashing Pumpkins, indie with
Spoon and
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and general uber-coolness with
M.I.A. and
Mute Math. And, of course, the almighty
Wilco. As a lover of the Crescent City, I found myself craving the action on
Frenchman Street for late night shows at
DBA with
Rotary Downs on Saturday night and on Sunday, an all-star lineup of George Porter Jr., Ian Neville, Ivan Neville and Russell Batiste.
Halloween and New Orleans is prime time for eye candy so I’d like to now share some photos taken by New Orleans’ own Zack Smith and JamBase resident snapper Dave Vann.
